Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has pledged swift interventions to address infrastructural challenges in public schools across the state.
Speaking during a meeting with principals of secondary schools and headmasters of primary schools at the Banquet Hall of TY Danjuma House, Jalingo, on Tuesday, the governor said while 60 schools are already undergoing major construction, immediate measures will be rolled out to give all schools a lifeline.
Governor Kefas disclosed that funds would be released directly to principals and head teachers to fast-track renovations, purchase furniture, provide fencing, plant trees, and open access roads. He also directed the revival of Parents-Teachers Associations (PTAs) to monitor the interventions.
In addition, he announced the creation of Community Education Development Committees in each local government area with a two-week deadline to submit quotations and proposals for urgent renovations, promising immediate disbursement of funds thereafter.
“Our commitment to developing our future leaders and strengthening the education ecosystem is unwavering. While we ease the burden of education on parents, we are determined to improve its quality in Taraba State,” Kefas said.
The governor further tasked school administrators to provide accurate data on the number of schools, teachers, and students across local governments, stressing the need for reliable information to drive policy decisions.
“I don’t believe teachers’ reward is only in heaven. I want everyone to make heaven, but teachers deserve their reward here on earth too,” he added.
Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Augustina Godwin, commended the governor’s free education policy, noting that it has significantly increased enrollment in public schools. She assured the ministry’s continued support for the governor’s vision of quality teaching, digital literacy, and vocational training.
