The Wukari Local Government Secretariat in Taraba State has been razed by a late-evening fire, destroying key administrative offices and vital records.
The Chairman of the Local Government, Bala Useni, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the fire broke out at about 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2026, after security personnel on duty alerted him to the emergency.
Despite frantic efforts by officials and security operatives to contain the blaze, the inferno raged for nearly three hours, consuming seven major administrative departments. The Chairman’s office was, however, spared.
Useni said the fire led to the loss of important documents, office equipment, and other critical infrastructure, dealing a significant blow to the council’s operations.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the Chairman disclosed that a full-scale investigation has been launched to ascertain its origin. He urged residents of the local government area to remain calm as authorities work to establish the facts.
The Chairman assured that the council is working closely with the Taraba State Government to ensure continuity of services with minimal disruption.
He also expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as a painful setback to the administration and the people of Wukari Local Government.
