Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of a tea seller, Muhammad Auwal Idris, in the Nassarawo Borehole area of Jimeta, Adamawa State.
Idris was reportedly attacked and beaten after he demanded payment from some customers who had bought tea from him on 28 September 2026.
The victim’s elder brother, Aliyu Idris, reported the incident at the Doubeli Divisional Police Headquarters, saying his brother had been attacked by four people identified as Isa, Japhet, Omo and Henry, who are residents of the Nassarawo Borehole community.
“I was called by someone that my brother had been beaten. They hit him so hard that he was left breathless,” Mr Idris said.
He said he was shocked by the incident because his brother had left home in good health.
“I asked people around if they knew those who committed the crime and they gave me their names, so I rushed to the police station to report,” he added.
The Adamawa State Police Command said its officers were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found Idris unconscious.
He was taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead, according to the police.
The police initially said the suspects were at large and that efforts were under way to track and arrest them.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Yahaya Njuroje, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, had condemned the incident and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigations to take over the case.
The commissioner also directed that the case be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law, Mr Njuroje said.
He assured the deceased’s family and members of the public that justice would be pursued, while warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
Mr Njuroje appealed to residents of Nassarawo and surrounding areas to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist the investigation.
The family of the deceased has called for justice over his death.
The police said anyone found culpable after the investigation would face the full weight of the law in accordance with due process.
