A deadly ambush by Boko Haram insurgents has claimed the lives of a Nigerian Army commanding officer and at least ten others during a military operation in Borno State.

Military sources confirmed that troops from the 21 Brigade, Operation Hadin Kai, were attacked on Friday evening near Kashimri village in Bama Local Government Area, while en route to a clearance operation.

Among those killed were the unit’s commanding officer, six soldiers, two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and two local vigilantes supporting the operation.

“Our troops were ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists while on a mission in Bama. Sadly, we lost our commanding officer, six of our men, two CJTF operatives, and two hunters,” a military intelligence source told this reporter on condition of anonymity.

Sources added that the terrorists suffered heavy casualties in the firefight, though exact numbers remain unconfirmed.

The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement as operations in the area continue.
