The University of Maiduguri has appointed renowned communication scholar, Prof. Abubakar Mu’azu, as the pioneer Dean of its newly established Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FCM).

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele approved the appointment in acting capacity for an initial period of six months, effective from September 9, 2025. The decision followed the Senate’s approval of the new faculty at its 319th Regular Meeting held on July 31, 2025.

The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies comprises departments of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, Broadcasting, Public Relations, Advertising, Development Communication, and Multimedia and Film Studies.

In a letter signed by the Registrar, Ahmad Lawan, Prof. Mu’azu was tasked with overseeing the day-to-day administration of the faculty, with responsibilities defined under the University of Maiduguri Act, CAP.U10.

Prof. Mu’azu, a respected academic in mass communication, media, and peace studies, previously served as Director of the Centre for Peace, Diplomatic and Development Studies (CPDDS), Director of Remedial Studies, and Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the university.

Reacting to the appointment, Dr. Abdulmutallib A. Abubakar described it as a “timely and strategic decision,” adding that Prof. Mu’azu’s wealth of experience and professional networks would be invaluable in developing the new faculty. He assured that staff and students would extend full cooperation to ensure his success.
