As part of Yobe state government continued efforts to implement the UN Secretary-General’s Action Agenda on Internal Displacement, a two-day capacity-building workshop was held in Damaturu to strengthen the leadership of traditional and statutory actors in addressing internal displacement in Yobe State.

Themed “Strengthening Traditional and Statutory Leadership Capacity on Solutions to Internal Displacement,” the workshop was organized by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Durable Solutions Unit.

Key participants included District Heads, Village and Ward Leaders, Women Representatives, and members of the State Technical Working Committee on Durable Solutions from the five Priority Local Government Areas—Gujba, Damaturu, Geidam, Tarmuwa, and Fika.

Over the course of the workshop, attendees engaged in sessions focused on:

  • The Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Framework on Durable Solutions
  • The role of traditional leadership in reintegration and peacebuilding
  • Conflict sensitivity and inclusive community engagement

Nigeria is one of 15 countries selected to pilot the implementation of durable solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs). Yobe State, in particular, has been at the forefront, with notable successes following the adoption of its Durable Solutions State Action Plan and IDP Policy.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from community leaders and stakeholders to foster sustainable, community-driven strategies to support reintegration and long-term peace for displaced persons across the state.
