The Nigerian Army has inaugurated a special court martial for the conviction of 35 officers and soldiers that have committed various offences in their line of duty.

It was inaugurated by Major Gen. G. U Chibuze, theatre commander, Operation Hadin Kai, who was represented by his deputy, Maj. Gen O. M Bellow at Officers Mess Maimalari Cantonment Maiduguri.

He charged the judges to be fair to all parties so as to boost the confidence of troops in the justice system, urging them to bring in professionalism into it.

‘I wish to also state that frivolous adjournment should be avoided, the court should make sure that sittings take place day to day as provided by the book,’ the theater commander said.

He noted that the 35 soldiers were tried for murder, rape, loss of service properties and failure to perform military duty, among other related crimes.

‘The army is known for one thing: discipline. We do not tolerate indiscipline in any form, what we are doing is to uphold that tradition, from our Chief of Army Staff down to the theatre commander are all routing for one thing discipline and justice.’
