Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State have unanimously elected former state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abubakar Bawa, as the new APC State Chairman.

The decision was reached during a closed-door meeting held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the Government House in Jalingo, attended by key party stakeholders and presided over by Governor Agbu Kefas, who is now regarded as the leader of the party in the state.

The emergence of Bawa followed a series of political consultations across the state, culminating in a consensus agreement among party leaders.

Notably, three aspirants for the chairmanship position — Hon. Ali Sani Kona, Rt. Hon. Habu Isa Ajiya, and Hon. Hadi Lau — who had earlier indicated plans to challenge the process in court, withdrew their opposition after dialogue with the governor and other stakeholders. The development is seen as a major turning point in the state party congress, which had generated internal tensions.

The consensus arrangement comes weeks after Governor Kefas defected from the PDP to the APC on January 31, 2026, alongside Bawa, members of the PDP State Executive Committee, and local government chairmen across the state.

With his election, Abubakar Bawa succeeds Barrister Ibrahim Tukur El-Sudi, who completed his second term as Taraba APC Chairman and is currently contesting for the position of North-East Zonal Chairman of the party.
