A torrential downpour in the early hours of Friday has left parts of Potiskum, Yobe State, underwater, displacing hundreds of residents and damaging homes.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) listed the worst-hit areas as Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa Bayan, Makarahuta, and Tandari.

Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Mohammed Goje, said the agency received an emergency alert and immediately deployed rapid response teams for on-the-ground assessment and intervention.

“No loss of life has been recorded so far, but a detailed assessment is ongoing. The government will ensure that life-saving support, protection, and immediate relief reach all affected persons,” Goje assured.

Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed SEMA to urgently provide relief materials to the displaced families, reiterating his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He also urged residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season and to promptly report emergencies to the relevant authorities.

The Maidawaarewa reports that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Yobe State, warning of potential flash floods, riverine flooding, and soil erosion.

Friday’s weather in Potiskum was dominated by thunderstorms, with a 100% chance of rain and temperatures peaking at 79°F. Emergency services say they are working round the clock to minimise the impact of the flooding and restore normalcy to affected communities.
