The Nigerian Army has appointed Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anaele as its first-ever female spokesperson, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s history.

Lt Col. Anaele will take over as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations on April 22, 2025, succeeding Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu.

With over 50 years of the Army’s establishment, Lt Col. Anaele becomes the first woman to lead its public relations department.

Her selection has been confirmed by top military sources, with formal handover arrangements already underway.

She brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Chief of Army Staff and later in the Army’s Civil-Military Relations department.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and a master’s degree in Strategic Studies. Her impressive credentials and leadership skills have earned her recognition.

Lt Col. Anaele’s appointment is expected to enhance the Army’s public image and foster clearer communication between citizens and soldiers.

Her leadership is also likely to inspire more women to pursue careers in military communications, promoting diversity and inclusion within the institution.

As the Nigerian Army’s first female spokesperson, Lt Col. Anaele’s appointment signals a new era of effective and inclusive communication for the nation’s armed forces.

Her tenure is anticipated to bring about a fresh perspective, strengthening the Army’s relationship with the public and promoting transparency.
