Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has empowered 150 almajirai with startup tools and financial support following their successful completion of a government-sponsored vocational training programme.

The initiative, launched in 2023, is part of the governor’s broader vision to integrate skills acquisition into the traditional Islamic education system, offering underprivileged children practical pathways to economic independence.

The beneficiaries received training in key trades such as electrical and solar installation, welding, carpentry, leatherwork, and building construction.

At a ceremony in Maiduguri on Wednesday, the governor lauded the graduates for embracing the opportunity to transform their lives through skills development.

‘By attending this training programme, you have taken a crucial step towards securing your future,’ he said.

‘Equipped with new skills, you now have the power to transform your dreams into reality. As your Governor, I reaffirm our full commitment to supporting Sangaya education and ensuring every learner has access to quality resources.’

The governor also issued a stern warning against child abuse within informal learning settings, particularly among Sangaya schools.

‘I want to address a critical concern—the safety and well-being of our Sangaya learners. The Borno State Government will not tolerate any form of molestation or violence, including caning. Every child, regardless of background, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect,’ he said.

Chairman of the Borno Sangaya Board, Sheikh Kalifa Aliyu Ahmad Abulfatahi, explained that the programme was developed to tackle the socio-educational challenges faced by almajirai, who often lack access to formal learning and economic opportunities.

He noted that the training was conducted in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Board to ensure quality and structure.

Also speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe—represented by Special Adviser Dr. Bukar Tijjani—revealed that certification would be issued to the graduates through a partnership with relevant institutions, including the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies.
