In a significant move to address the high prevalence of kidney disease in Yobe State, the government has launched a research program to investigate the root causes of the disease.
The research, which is solely sponsored by the Yobe State Government, aims to randomly select 2000 people from Bade and Damaturu Local Government Areas (LGAs) for the study.
Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, Special Adviser on Science, Research, and Innovation, and Director of Biomedical Research Training Centre (BioRTC), made a call to action, urging community members to support the researchers and enumerators in carrying out the study.
This appeal was made during the opening of the Yobe State Kidney Researchers’ Training Programme, held at the Sandunes Hotel in Damaturu.
The research team will collaborate with experts from the United Kingdom to analyze the specimens collected and identify the underlying causes of kidney disease in the state.
This partnership is part of a collaboration agreement signed two years ago, directed by Governor Mai Mala Buni.
Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Dr. Gana Lawan Muhammad, represented by Dr. Baba Waru Goni, expressed gratitude to Governor Mai Mala Buni for his commitment to the health sector.
The commissioner revealed that experts from renowned institutions, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and Bayero University Kano, are participating in the research.
The research program is a crucial step towards addressing the growing concern of kidney disease in Yobe State.
With the support of the community and the collaboration of local and international experts, the state government aims to uncover the root causes of the disease and develop effective solutions to combat it.
