Religious Ethnicity in Democratic Politics: Dr. Sani Yahaya Jingir by Khalid Tebo

“Because, he is a Muslim and I practice Islam, I chose Muslim-Muslim.”

On February 19th, Dr. Sani Yahaya Jingir, a Sheikh and one of the arrow heads of Izala in Jos, stated that Tinubu and Kashim Shettima should be elected to rule Nigeria since they are Muslims. He believes that voting “Muslim-Muslim” protects Islam and Muslims in Nigeria.

When I heard it, I had a different opinion: it is better to vote for anyone who is righteous, just and qualified in democracy from any religion, not someone who only belongs to a particular religion, and who does not believe one Nigeria.

Every Muslim who believes in the Qur’an and Sunnah knows that protecting religion is a must. But it’s not a good religious habit to give mandate to injustice due to selfish interest. If religious sentiment and hostility favours its actors, God will not punish the Khawarij, including Boko Haram, ISWAP, ISIS, and other jihadist groups that aspire to build an Islamic state by attacking God’s orders.

However, when it comes to injustice in leadership, there are exceptions within Muslims, whose oppression is greater than that of non-Muslims in practice. Tinubu and Kashim are both Muslims, and no one behaves according to Islamic principles and values. Those who elected them in the name of politics did a better job, but those who elected them in the name of religious fanaticism remained the problem in Nigeria.

Those who are elected are not religious, let alone pious, this is the reason why a good Muslim will not elect them to rule this country. They were elected because of money and material things, but not for the development of Islam. After the election, those who claim to protect religion are the first to destroy it. The vice president is the first to fight Islam. The preference of a rotten Christian over a good Muslim and northerner from the South is enough for Dr. Yahaya Jingir, this is betrayal, they fought against the religion he was ’jealous’ of, and now the hardship persists. I am sure by now he realizes his sentimentalism.

Politically, everyone qualifies to lead a democratic Nigeria in accordance with the constitution, but in a religion, it is not, one must behaves religiously, and in Islam, if a religious person has no concern for justice, the Muslim should not vote for him, and a non-Muslim, who is more righteous is better than him as far as the ”maslaha” or public interests is concerned. Because given preference to injustice over justice, Nigerians suffer for the second time. Of course, Islam is not the point of view in a democracy, but God prefers justice in leadership than religious fanaticism.
