My parents jailed for my sake, I feel guilty – Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia

Sonia Ekweremadu, the 25-year-old daughter of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has reacted to the sentencing of her parents by the United Kingdom, UK court for an organ-harvesting crime.

The UK court had on Friday, sentenced Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months imprisonment while his wife, Beatrice bagged four years and six months imprisonment over a plot to harvest a kidney of an underaged Nigerian to restore the health of their daughter.

A medical doctor who was the third accomplice in the suit, Dr Obinna Obeta was also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for offering to aid the organ harvesting process.

Speaking on the matter, Sonia who spoke with BBC on Friday shortly after the court judgement, said things may never be the same with her family again.

While holding back her tears, Sonia opined that she felt guilty over the whole situation, stating that her parents are jailed because of her ill health.

She said, “I don’t think it will ever be the same again. And obviously, I feel guilty because I feel like all these have happened because of me.

“Life is just some dynamic. Like you’re one day in your house chilling and the next day your whole life is turned around”.
