A disturbing incident has rocked the security architecture in Taraba State, as a newly recruited soldier, Dauda Dedan, is accused of fatally stabbing a police constable during a late-night altercation in Jalingo.
The suspect, Dedan, who reportedly just completed training at a military recruitment depot, allegedly attacked and killed Constable Aaron John of the Taraba State Police Command around 9:00 p.m. on Monday in Mayo-Goi, a suburb of the state capital.
The Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), James Lashen, confirmed the tragic event to journalists, revealing that the attack stemmed from a personal disagreement between the soldier and the police officer. The confrontation escalated into violence, ending with the fatal stabbing of Constable John.
Following the incident, the soldier reportedly fled the scene and is currently at large. However, authorities have assured the public that a joint investigation between the police and the Nigerian Army is underway to apprehend the suspect.
“The Army has launched an internal investigation, and both the Army and Police are working in close collaboration to locate and arrest the fugitive soldier,” Lashen stated. “They have already visited his residence, and all necessary efforts are being made to ensure justice is served.”
Despite the shocking nature of the incident, Lashen emphasized that the relationship between the Nigerian Army and the Police remains “very cordial” and intact.
The tragic killing of Constable Aaron John has sent shockwaves through the security community in Taraba State, raising urgent questions about inter-agency conduct and discipline among newly enlisted personnel.
