The Yobe State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening digital security in the face of escalating cyber threats, as it hosted the 2025 Cybersecurity Symposium on Monday. Themed “Contemporary Challenges and Solutions,” the one-day event spotlighted the urgent need for comprehensive cybersecurity strategies amid the state’s ongoing digital transformation.

Organised by the Office of the Special Adviser on Policy Delivery, Dr. Kole Shettima, in collaboration with the Focal Person on Cybersecurity and Information Technology, Abdulmuminu Kolo Gulani, the symposium brought together stakeholders from government, academia, and the technology sector.

Held at the Ibrahim Geidam Hall, Yobe State University, Damaturu, the event attracted a cross-section of participants including IT professionals, policymakers, students, and security experts. Discussions focused on a range of pressing topics such as data breaches, ransomware, online fraud, and the spread of misinformation.

Speaking virtually during the opening session, Dr. Shettima emphasized the growing importance of cybersecurity in governance. “As Yobe advances in digitizing governance and public services, cybersecurity is no longer optional but a critical pillar of our development strategy,” he said.

In his closing remarks, Gulani stressed the necessity of proactive measures to combat rising cybercrime in the state and beyond. “Our goal is to equip residents with the necessary tools to recognize and avoid online scams, fraud, and harassment,” he said. “By addressing these threats, we aim to safeguard our citizens and ensure they are protected from cybercrime and cyberbullying.”

The symposium concluded with a call to action for continued collaboration and investment in digital safety initiatives to ensure a secure online environment for all Yobe residents.
