Students in Yobe State are still unable to access their West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) results, more than two weeks after the state government said it had settled the examination fees.

The Yobe State Government announced on 24 August that it had paid the WAEC and NECO fees for students in public schools across the state.

But as of Thursday, 10 September, multiple students said their results remained inaccessible, with the examination portals still showing that they were “indebted”.

The development has caused concern among students who need their results for admission and other academic purposes.

The state government had said the payments were made the previous week but had not yet been received by the examination bodies because of a technical problem.

Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Dr Mohammed Goje, said at the time that the issue was being addressed and that students should be able to access their results “this week or next”.

That deadline has now passed without the problem being resolved for some students.

Government says payment was made

The government said the payment was intended to ease the financial burden on parents and ensure that eligible students in public schools could sit their examinations.

It described the payment as part of wider efforts to improve education in the state.

The government also highlighted initiatives including the 3.0 Spelling Bee as part of its efforts to support students and improve educational outcomes.

However, the continuing “indebted” status reported by students raises questions about whether the payment has been fully processed and reflected in the examination bodies’ systems.

Students affected by the issue are now waiting for clarification from both the state government and the examination bodies on when their results will become available.

For students seeking admission to higher institutions, any further delay could have consequences because examination results are often required as part of the admissions process.

The Yobe government has yet to publicly announce a new date for the full resolution of the problem.
