In a significant boost to healthcare in Yobe State, the government of Japan has provided health facilities that will benefit over 300,000 women in the state.

The project, titled “Restoring Emergency, Maternal, and Child Health Services,” was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Health, Yobe State, and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC).

The handing-over ceremony took place at the General Hospital in Jakusko, where the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) officially handed over the project to the Yobe State government.

The project, which runs from February 29, 2023, to June 30, 2024, focuses on procuring and rehabilitating health facilities, including radiology and medical laboratory service units at the General Hospital Jakusko.

Dr. Sani Kadugum, Principal Medical Officer, expressed gratitude to UNOPS, the government of Japan, NEDC, and the Yobe State government for executing the project, which will have a direct impact on the lives of communities in Yobe State.

The project comes as a relief to the state, which has faced significant challenges in healthcare delivery due to the insurgency by Boko Haram.

The conflict resulted in the destruction and vandalism of healthcare facilities, hospital equipment, and vehicles, as well as the killing of healthcare workers.

Top government officials, heads of boards, parastatals, and agencies, and traditional office holders attended the handing-over ceremony, marking a significant milestone in efforts to restore healthcare services in Yobe State.
