APC Yet To Zone Presidential Ticket

0

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has reviewed its primary election schedule, said the claim that it had zoned its presidential ticket to any part of the country is false, the decision was made at a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee, led by Abdullahi Adamu, yesterday.

The APC hierarchy has rejected calls to zone its presidential ticket to the South, citing the fact that the current president, Muhammadu Buhari, is from the North, as is the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, but the opinion to throw the ticket open to all the six geo-political zones of the country, seems to be gaining the upper hand.

There are 23 presidential candidates running for the APC ticket, nineteen are from the South, while four are from the North, eight of the Southern aspirants are from the South-East, which has the fewest delegates; seven are from the South-West; and four are from the South-South, while North-West has two, whereas North-East and North-Central each have one in the north.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Senator Ajayi Borrofice, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, Dr Tunde Bakare, Dr Kayode Fayemi, and Senator Ibikunle Amosun are the APC candidates from the South-West.

Chief Emeka Nwajiuba, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Engr Dave Umahi, Senator Ken Nnamani, Mr. Nicholas Nwagbo, Mr. Ikeobasi Mokelu, and Mrs. Uju Ohanenye are all from the South-East.

Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Ben Ayade, and Mr. Tein Jack-Rich are the South-South candidates.

Alhaji Yahaya Bello (North-Central), Senate President Ahmad Lawan (North-East), Mohammed Badaru (North-West), and Ahmed Yerima (North-West) are the candidates from the North (North-West).

Asked if the APC has zoned the presidential ticket, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr, Felix Morka, said: “There is no such decision made by the National Working Committee.”

Vote Me Based On What I’ve Done, Says Amaechi

A former Minister of Transportation and All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant, Rotimi Ameachi, has said that he is the most qualified among all the presidential aspirants.

Ameachi made the remark when he paid a courtesy call on Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, at the Government House, Kano, on Wednesday.

The presidential hopeful, who was in Kano to meet with APC stakeholders, said he remained the most qualified and experienced among all the presidential aspirants with the various political positions he had held in the country.

“Even though I am not the youngest, I am the most experienced of all of them because I served as a member of the Assembly for eight years.

“I also served as governor for eight years and served as a minister for seven years. I led the campaign at the peak of the political crisis that unseated a sitting government at that time.

“So don’t vote for me just because I am Amaechi but by what I have done,” Amaechi told Ganduje.

Ameachi, who called on Ganduje to give him the necessary support to enable him to clinch the presidential ticket, said if elected President, he would improve the power supply for economic growth and development of the country.

In his remarks, Ganduje assured Ameachi of his support, saying we know how much you have committed yourself to the coming of this government and how you have invested.

Ganduje used the occasion to commend Ameachi for concretising the position of Kano as the biggest railway station in Africa and ensuring that the Dala inland Dry Port project, which was abandoned many years ago, was reawarded and soon be completed.

Among those who accompanied the presidential aspirant to Kano was. former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), and former Inspector General of Police (retd.) Sulaiman Abba.

NANS Beg Atiku, Tinubu, Others To Raise Money For ASUU Demands

1

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to all presidential aspirants, including the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come to the aid of Nigerian students.

The students have urged the politicians to help raise funds to settle the demands of the striking university lecturers, who extended their industrial action for another three months.

The students’ body made the appeal in a statement signed by the Chairman, Ogun State Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Kehinde Damilola Simeon.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had embarked on the strike action and vowed to continue extending the same until the Federal Government accedes to its demands.

The union is demanding the revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances and the deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution for payment of university lecturers.

The statement said the students decided to make the appeal to the politicians and foremost aspirants following the failure of the Federal Government to meet the demands of ASUU despite many dialogues.

NANS urged all presidential aspirants to come to the aid of Nigerian students to ensure that public universities are reopened, insisting that if the politicians can afford the exorbitant cost of nomination forms, they can afford to rescue Nigerian students.

“All the Presidential aspirants, especially those from the ruling APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must rise up and come to the rescue of Nigerian students.

“If truly the aspirants mean well for Nigerians as they are claiming and if they have the love of Nigerian students at heart, they should raise the fund to meet the demands of ASUU since the Federal government has failed woefully in its commitment to improving the education sector.

“Today in Nigeria, both university and polytechnic education is paralysed due to the ongoing strike actions by both members of ASUU and ASUP. It is very unfortunate and unacceptable.

“Nigerian students hereby call on the presidential aspirant, in the spirit of patriotism and in the interest of development to rally around Nigerian students.

“All of these aspirants paid huge amounts of money to procure their nomination forms, so donating funds to rescue the tertiary education in Nigeria should not be too difficult for them,” it said.

“It is only by doing this, that Nigerian students and Nigerians, in general, will respect and show support for their ambitions”.

A former Governor of Kano State and senator representing Kano Central District, Ibrahim Shekarau, on Wednesday, dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Shekarau, one of the founding members of APC, has moved to the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) alongside thousands of his supporters.

The former governor announced his defecting at his Bompai GRA residence in Kano on Wednesday.

Mr Shekarau, alongside another former governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were seen signing a register. He later obtained the membership registration card of the NNPP, amidst loud cheers from thousands of supporters.

His defection followed weeks of lobbying from both the APC and PDP, wooing Mr Shekarau into their party.

Mr Shekarau had, in 2014, defected from the APC to the People Democratic Party (PDP). In that year, he protested against the APC for giving the party’s structures in Kano to Mr Kwankwaso, who was the governor at the time, following the latter’s decamping to the APC from the PDP.

Again, in the buildup to the 2019 election, Mr Shekarau rejoined the APC in 2018 after the National Working Committee of the PDP dissolved the Kano State Executive Committee of the party and constituted a caretaker committee allegedly to favour same Mr Kwankwaso, who returned to the PDP.

Messrs Kwankwaso and Shekarau used to be sworn political adversaries and had never formed an alliance before now.

Senator Tinubu who is also the national leader of the APC insisted that he would not retire from politics until he becomes the president of Nigeria.

Tinubu who said this during his visit to Benue State to formally inform the delegates and stakeholders on his ambition to contest for the president of the country said he had all it would take to change the fortunes of Benue State and Nigeria at large if elected president.

“I see no reason why Benue as the food basket of the country will still be engaging in crude way of farming without processing plants, research institutes for improved and mechanized agriculture and my becoming the president in 2023 will rekindle the hope of Nigerians and bring back the lost glory of Benue farmers,” Tinubu added.

“When elected I will bring the experience of my leadership as the governor of Lagos State to bear. And I want to guarantee you that I will run a transparent, open and inclusive government that will impact on all citizens.

“I want to tell you that Nigeria is rich. What we need is to redirect our resources and channel them in the right direction” Tinubu said.

Earlier, former governor of Borno State, Senator Kashim Shatima, and Hon. Kashim Imam, in their address described Tinubu as a unifying force that had held the APC together.

The duo described Tinubu as a leader who sacrificed so much in ensuring the success of the APC and democracy at large urging all delegates in Benue State to choose him as the candidate of the party in the coming congress.

I’m The Best For 2023 Presidency, Says Saraki

0

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday declared himself as the best among those aspiring to be president in 2023.

Saraki spoke in Osogbo during a meeting with the leadership and members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun state

The presidential aspirant also said he had been close to the PDP family in the state, adding that he had also worked with the party to ensure that PDP returned to government in the state.

He then called for support of the delegates from the state to ensure victory for him during the party’s presidential primary.

“There is no other person with that kind of experience. Whether you are talking about executive experience, whether you are talking about restructuring which includes constitutional review and amendment, for somebody who has headed the parliament, or whether you are talking about uniting Nigerians, you know a national assembly is a place where you are first among equals. You must have the capacity to bring people together.

Army makes clarification on corruption allegations against top officers

The Nigerian Army on Tuesday dismissed allegations of corruption against some of its top officers.

A statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in Abuja, said some aggrieved personnel wrote an open letter to the president, accusing top army officers of corruption.

An online report had emerged on Monday that some aggrieved personnel had, in an impersonal letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, accused top army officers of corruption.

Nwachukwu said more worrisome was the insinuation that soldiers had threatened to embark on strike, saying such an action was tantamount to mutiny in the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He said the Nigerian army has subscribed to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) as directed by the Federal Government since 2018.

He added that the system had facilitated the flawless payment of salaries and allowances of personnel.

Nwachukwu said subscribing to IPPIS was part of the effort to guard against fraudulent practices and entrench accountability and transparency in the system.

According to him, the IPPIS does not permit any personnel access to payment processes.

“These processes, undoubtedly, provide zero opportunity for anyone or group of persons to manipulate personnel entitlements.

“It is also important to state that the army and sister services jointly operate a Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS), which is applicable to the Armed Forces of Nigeria in general.

“Therefore, what is applicable to personnel of other services (Nigerian Navy and Air Force), invariably applies to personnel of the Nigerian army.

“Suffice to state that personnel salaries and allowances are promptly and appropriately paid, without any form of shortchanging,” he said.
