Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has acknowledged that Christians are among the victims of Nigeria’s persistent insecurity challenges, noting that Muslims are equally affected.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on Wednesday, Gumi emphasized that insecurity in the country cuts across religious lines and impacts all communities.
“There is no doubt that Christians are victims of insecurity, and Muslims too are suffering,” he said.
The cleric also called on the United States government to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, stressing that while the country may require foreign assistance, such support should not undermine its independence.
Reflecting on historical precedents, Gumi referenced the Nigerian Civil War, noting that global powers took opposing positions at the time. He urged policymakers to prioritize Nigeria’s national interest in shaping foreign relations.
“It appears ironic that Nigeria’s foreign policy is now influenced externally. We must focus on our national interest,” he added.
