The Taraba State Government is taking bold steps toward sustainable environmental management with plans to establish a waste recycling industry aimed at transforming waste into wealth and improving sanitation across the state.
To kickstart the initiative, a waste management firm, Sector Lead, has arrived in Jalingo, the state capital, to assess existing dump sites and evaluate the nature and volume of waste generated. The goal is to determine the most suitable recycling technology for the region.
The inspection tour covered major waste dumping areas including Pantinapu, Mile Six, Roadblock, Runde, and Sibre, the proposed location for the recycling plant.
Speaking during the site visits, Commissioner for Waste Management, Hon. Shonzen Bernard, said the assessment is part of Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas’ commitment to converting waste into economic opportunities for the people of Taraba.
“The company is here to support the government’s vision by studying the nature of waste produced in the state and developing a recycling solution that turns it into valuable products,” Bernard stated.
He also revealed that the Ministry of Waste Management has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sector Lead, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Environment, to drive the project forward.
Engineer Victor Dogo, Technical Counsel to Sector Lead, explained that the team’s mission is to gather data on the quantity, quality, and composition of waste in the state. This information will be used to design a waste recycling system that not only cleans the environment but also contributes to climate change mitigation and economic empowerment.
“Our goal is to enhance the quality of life in Jalingo by responsibly managing waste,” Dogo said. “This visit provides critical insight for developing a strategic and actionable recycling plan for Taraba.”
The initiative is expected to create jobs, boost local industries, and promote a cleaner, healthier environment as part of the state’s broader environmental sustainability agenda.
