Yobe State Police Command said it has made another significant breakthrough in combating cybercrime and fraud in the state with the arrest of fake Navy personnel who specialised in defrauding members of the public.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday.

The 29-year-old suspect identified as Agugu Joshua, was arrested in possession of a fake Nigerian Navy staff ID card, which he used to scam unsuspecting victims, particularly POS vendors and provision store owners.

“His modus operandi involved generating fake receipts on his Kuda bank app, making it seem like successful transactions, even when they weren’t.

“To gain his victims’ trust, Agugu would initially make a small, successful transaction. He would then use the app to edit the receipt, delaying the alert to the recipient. This clever tactic allowed him to deceive his victims and get away with their money or goods”, the statement explained.

It added that his arrest was made possible in a covert operation on December 18, 2024, at 1400hrs, by operatives of the State Intelligence Department, SID.

The Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, in the statement cautioned the public to be vigilant and beware of such scams.
