AFCON: Ziyech Left Out of Morocco’s Squad

Hakim Ziyech was the notable absentee as Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodzic yesterday named his squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.

The Chelsea winger had a fallout with the coach earlier this year and was overlooked for the six World Cup qualifiers played between September and November, making his omission no shock although the Dutch-born Ziyech is seen as Morocco’s key player.

Halilhodzic also left out the Ajax Amsterdam full back Noussair Mazraoui, who he also accused in mid-year of feigning injury to get out of playing in a friendly, an accusation Mazraoui has since denied.

The veteran coach sprung a surprise by naming Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, who has broken into Barcelona’s team, and attacking midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, who has been one of the players key to Angers’ bright start to the Ligue 1 season in France. Both are uncapped.

Morocco, who will be one of the pre-tournament favourites, compete in Group C with Comoros Islands, Gabon and Ghana at the finals, which get underway on 9 January.

Super Eagles and Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, is yet to come to term with Leicester City’s defeat on Wednesday night in the League Cup.

The Foxes had maintained 2-0 for most part of the game, but got ousted 5-4 in penalty shootouts by Liverpool.

It was Leicester City that race to an early 2-0 lead but the game ended in a 3-3 stalemate after regular time

Ndidi who was in action for the entire duration of the game was not happy about the outcome but took positives from the match.

” Sad we couldn’t get through, but lots of positives to take away to the next game,” he said.

Leicester are expected to redeem their image this weekend when action resumes in the Premier League.

Customs intercepts N10.4m worth of Indian Hemp ordered by Bandits in Katsina

250 parcels of cannabis sativa(Indian Hemp) worth over N10.4m, allegedly on the way to Katsina State for bandits consumption ,was intercepted by the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) , the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, has said.

Vanguard reports the Comptroller of FOU Zone B Kaduna, A.B. Hamisu, said other drugs seized by the FOU include: 75,582 suspected tablets of Tramadol worth over N29.7m. This he said also promotes banditry and other forms of criminality.

1,582 tablets of D5 worth N12,720,011.68 which is not good for circulation because it can stimulate crime, were also seized.”

“The culprits were arrested in a notorious Basari Area in Katsina.I am sure the hemp was destined for the bandits as the illicit product was well packaged.”

We are appealing to members of the public who have information on such Illicit items to make same available to security agencies for prompt action.”

“Whoever has information on such should please pass it on to us. Whatever information we receive is under confidentiality,” he promised.

Lalong signs N106.8bn 2022 budget into law

The Plateau state 2022 appropriation bill has been signed into law by Governor Simon Lalong, with an assurance to complete on-going projects and initiating new ones.

The N106.8bn 2022 appropriation was passed by the House of Assembly as presented by the governor in October.

Governor Lalong’s spokesman, Dr Makut Macham, in a statement, Thursday, said the signing of the appropriation bill into law was made at the Government House, Rayfield Jos with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Sanda, amongst other members of the House witnessing.

“The passage of the bill is another proof of the cordial and symbiotic relationship existing between the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Arms of Government in Plateau State.

“Despite the recent change of leadership in the House between the period the budget was laid and when it was passed, the honorable members have shown that the parliament as an institution can always resolve its challenges and work for the interest of the people,” he said.

According to Governor Lalong, the members have rallied round and quickly put behind them the unfortunate events that happened at the House recently, which clearly shows that public interest supersedes personal interests and that the legislature is the soul of democracy.

Lalong said he was not satisfied with the revenue generating capacity of the state despite the efforts that his administration has put in place, noting that the government has to do more in looking at other sources of revenue as well as considering funding options for projects such as public private partnerships and build operate and transfer models.

“Government will focus on completing on-going projects and initiating new ones, said there shall be emphasis on prudence and transparency in the utilization of resources,” he assured.

The state Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Sylvester Wallangko, said out of the N106.8billion budget size, the sum of N70.8billion, representing 66.31% is for recurrent expenditure while N35.9billion, representing 33.69% is for capital expenditure.

Bauchi: We demolished Gidan Kara to end social vices – LG chair

The chairman of Jama’are local government area of Bauchi state, Sama’ila Yusuf Jarma, has said his council carried out the demolition of the house of one Williams Duru in order to curtail degrading social vices in the area.

In a press statement issued to journalists in Bauchi, Thursday, the chairman said the house popularly known as Gidan Kara, was the epicenter of social vices being engaged by young boys and girls in the area.

He said the move became imperative as no responsible government would condone acts such as alcoholism, sex hawking, drugs and substance abuse among other nefarious activities in the society, which Duru’s house was known for.

“Following series of complaints received from parents, guardians and the traditional institution over the deviant activities taking place in Duru’s Gidan Kara, the local government summoned a meeting of stakeholders, namely; the Police, DSS, NSCDC, NDLEA, NCS and the Emirate Council, where it was agreed that Mr. Williams Duru be called for a way out of the quagmire.

“After a meeting between the stakeholders and Mr. Duru, it was unanimously resolved that the house be acquired by the LGA and the owner of the house be compensated.

“After bargaining, Mr. Duru agreed to sell the house at the sum Two Million Naira (2,000, 000.00), in which the Local Government paid to Williams Duru through his account and he acknowledged receipt of the payment,” the statement said.

Sama’ila Jarma pointed out that, while the structure was being demolished after obtaining a court order in the presence of the District Head, DPO, DSS and all other relevant stakeholders, it was surprising that Mr. Duru opted to go to court after the amicable resolution of the issue which everyone saw as a win-win outcome.

The three-year marriage between Queen Silekunola Naomi and the Ooni of Ife Adeyeye Ogunwusi has come to an abrupt end, with the estranged Olori stating in her Instagram post, Thursday: “Today, I am a mother to God’s unique gift. I am no longer a slave to my thoughts of perfection.”

Announcing the separation, the Queen set the records straight about her separation to avoid any misconceptions, saying her decision to move on has nothing to do with the Ooni marrying another queen.

She stated that she was indeed the only wife of the Ooni throughout their marriage even though there were side attractions, which “was never an issue.”

“I shall no longer be referred to as wife to the Ooni of Ife or as Queen of Ile-Ife” as she described herself as the Queen of the people and mother of her son.

Naomi further alleged the hypocrisy of the monarch, stating that Ooni’s public perception is different from his true character.

Her post reads: “I bless the Lord Almighty for His faithfulness in the last 3 years of my marriage. In life’s journey, it isn’t how far. Still, how well, indeed though Satan should buffet if trials should come, I have this blessed assurance controlling all situations and saying to me it is well with my soul. Certainly, it is well. I made my journey into the ancient throne of Ife with faith in my heart and love for the keeper of it.

“Few impressions I would love to correct. If anyone knows otherwise, they are free to come up with facts. Let it be known that this decision to move on did not come because his majesty is married to another queen. As many would love to assume, throughout our life as a couple, I was the only married wife to him. There were side attractions, but it was never an issue.

”I never approached him with any revelation of any sort, as many believed he contacted me first and made his proposal known several months later.
The marriage was not an arranged one, as many have misconstrued. I never knew the prophetess said to have introduced me to him. Instead, he introduced her to me after I agreed to marry him. I was only being polite out of respect for him.

Naomi and the Ooni tied the knots in 2018 after Olori Wuraola left the Ooni in 2017.

In reaction to the Instagram post by the former Olori in which she announced her divorce from the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Enitan Ogunwusi, the palace faulted the claim saying “it is not true.”

Ooni’s Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, was quoted as saying, “This is not the first time such rumor’s had been peddled. There was a time it was reported that she left the palace and the next thing, she gave birth. So, the story is not true and it should not be taken seriously.”

NDLEA destroys 5,000 litres codeine cough syrup

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tuesday, destroyed 5,000 litres of expired codeine cough syrup seized during various operations in Lagos.

This came as Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, stressed the need for collaboration from both the private and public sectors in the war against illicit drugs in Lagos, in particular, and Nigeria in general.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mijisola Adeyeye and Hamzat, represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, witnessed the destruction of the expired cough syrups seized by the agency at the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) headquarters Alausa, Ikeja, during the official inspection and demonstration of the agency’s mini- effluent treatment plant (ETP) used in the destruction of expired codeine.

Adeyeye, who commended Lagos state government for putting up a standard ETP to mitigate against pollution of the environment, said the 250,000 litres was just part of over 2 million litres of codeine syrups seized from various operations by the agency.

According to her: “I wish we all recall that about three and half years (31/2) years ago that Nigeria suddenly found herself faced with scourge of abuse of codeine containing syrups by some of our youths. This abuse was as a result of consumption of codeine containing syrup against off the label use of the syrups.

“NAFDAC, as a responsible called for recall of the syrup and the exercise resulted in mopping up over two and a half million bottles of codeine containing syrup from all over Nigeria by the Agency’s Pharmacovigilance and Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate.

“These were kept on hold at the respective pharmaceutical companies. After some settlement with the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMGMAN), the codeine-containing syrup from all over Nigeria by the Agency’s Pharmacovigilance and Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate.

“The next big task is taking a decision on how best to destroy this product. Three Directors of NAFDAC were put on this assignment.

“I wish to express my profound appreciation to Lagos Government for making the facility available for NAFDAC to use for this critical national assignment.”

Speaking, Sanwo-Olu, stressed the need for more collaboration with federal government and private organisations if the menace of drug abuse must be eradicated or be brought to barest minimum.

Borno state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has sent delegation to Kilangar community in Chan-Chan Dana District of Askira Uba LG to condole with victims of the Boko Haram attack in the area.

The delegation, led by the state Deputy Speaker and member representing Askira Uba LG, Hon Abdullahi Musa Askira, along with the Commissioner, Ministry of Reconstruction Rehabilitation and Resettlement, Engr Mustapha Gubio, were received by the Chairman Askira LG, Hon Ahmed Abdullahi Ahidjo with the Commanding Officer 155 Battalion Askira, Lt Col EA Ajayi, before proceeding to Kilangar community.

The team was received in Kilangar by the District Head of Chan-Chan Dana, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu.

While narrating the incident, the royal father said 9 persons were killed, 3 hospitalised, 11 vehicles were burnt, with shops, blocks of classrooms and farm products destroyed or carted away.

Engr Abdullahi Askira while condoling with his community over the incidence confirmed that he received report that 9 persons were killed, 3 hospitalized, 11 vehicles burnt down, 3 were carted away with over 350 bags of farm products, 9 houses, 2 blocks of classrooms and 3 shops set ablaze and looted.

Engr Askira then handed over N500,000 cash each to the 9 deceased families and N250,000 to the 3 hospitalized victims.

Other members of the delegation were Hon Ali Bulama Yajiwa, representing Konduga LG, Hon Ali Bukar Zangeri, Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Hon Dogo M Shettima, Special Assistant on MRRR among others.

Senate quench planned override of Presidential Veto

Contrary to threats made by some Senators on Tuesday to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the 2010 Electoral Act (Amendment Bill) Bill 2021, the Senate chickened out on the alleged plot at Wednesday plenary.

Senators George Sekibo, Mathew Urhoghide and some others who pleaded anonymity, had after Tuesday plenary at separate interviews granted journalists, threatened to see to override of Presidential veto on the bill.

But after about 40minutes closed door session, the Senate Wednesday made a face saving move by resolving to consult the House of Representatives and their constituents before taking any action on issues raised by President Buhari in the rejected bill.

Announcing resolutions taken at the closed door session, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said, “The Senate in the closed session discussed how to respond to the letter from Mr. President on the electoral bill amendment.

“But provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) does not permit the upper chamber to exclusively take any action on such matters in the absence of the House of Representatives, since the later has embarked on recess.

“The Senate consequently resolved to consult with the House of Representatives in January when both the Senate and House will be in session.

“Presently, the House of Reps has gone or recess and like we all know, the constitutional provision is for the Senate and House of Representatives to jointly take the appropriate action.

“The Senate also resolved to consult with our constituents during our recess in January.

“The Senate believes that our constituents have a role to play as the major stakeholders in the laws that we make in the National Assembly.”

President Buhari had on the bill in a letter dated December 13, 2021, explained that his decision to withhold assent to the electoral bill was informed by advice from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government after a thorough review.

According to the President, signing the bill into law would have serious adverse legal, financial, economic and security consequences on the country, particularly in view of Nigeria’s peculiarities.

He added that it would also impact negatively on the rights of citizens to participate in the government as constitutionally ensured.

Naija Ratels rout Adamawa Queens in NWFL league clash

Naija Ratels football club of Abuja a while ago on Wednesday smashed visiting Adamawa Queens 5-2 in a Nigeria Women Football League (NWPL) clash.

Two goals each from Adugbe Olamide and Ezekiel Motunrayo, then a lone strike from Adesina Timinwu sealed another glorious league outing for the coach Bankole Olowokere tutored team.

Ijeoma Obi had put Adamawa girl ahead in the first half, before Chinyere George bagged another consolation for the away side.

Speaking shortly after the match, coach Olowokere praised his side for stepping up the game in the final half.

He said, “I don’t have any game plan to score mostly in second half. I only try to tell my players to be calm and focused. Again, our focus is to continue to take each match as it comes.”

On his part, Adamawa Queens Jacob Vandi attributed the loss to fatigue, adding, “I took charge of the team four days to the start of the current league campaign.”

The victory for Naija Ratels coincided with the wedding anniversary of its owner Barr. Paul Edeh.
