Kanuri Origins of the Tinubu Family in Lagos – Farooq Kperogi

0

There is probably no “indigenous” Lagos family that is more famous than the Tinubu family. But, although the family is now clearly culturally Yoruba, its ethnic provenance is traceable to what is now Borno State, according to Lagos historians, underscoring the historical and sociological inaccuracy of notions of ethnic purism in Nigeria.

The patriarch of the Tinubu family, historians of Lagos say, was a Kanuri man known as Momodu [it was most probably Modu since Kanuris tend to shorten Muhammad to Modu] Bugara who was also alternately called Momoh Abubakar, Momoh Bukar, or Alfa Ibunu. He was an Islamic scholar who migrated from the defunct Bornu Empire to what was then the Lagos Colony in the 1800s and achieved some renown in the Lagos society.

In the mid-1800s, he was employed as an Islamic spiritual guardian by Madam Efunroye Tinubu, a famous wealthy slave trader, power broker, and agitator in Lagos (who was later banished to Abeokuta by the Lagos Oba of the time). In time, the spiritual guardian fell in love with his employer, and they got married.

But the marriage didn’t produce children. Apparently, the childlessness of the marriage was a consequence of Madam Tinubu’s infertility because she consented to Bugara marrying other women with whom he bore children.

A mark of the cordiality that existed between Madam Tinubu and Alfa Bugara in spite of Bugara’s marriage to other women and having children by them was evident in the fact that Bugara’s children adopted Tinubu as their family name even though they didn’t share any filiation with Madam Tinubu.

I distilled these tidbits about the history of the Tinubu family from an insightful inaugural lecture titled “The Undertaker, the Python’s Eye and Footsteps of the Ant: The Historian’s Burden” delivered by Professor Siyan Oyeweso at the Lagos State University (LASU) in 2006. Oyeweso, one of Nigeria’s well-regarded historians who had an extensive academic career at LASU, now teaches at the Osun State University.

Professor Oyeweso quoted Madam Tinubu’s biographer by the name of Oladipo Yemitan as saying that while most people who bear the Tinubu name were children of Bugara who had no direct blood link with Madam Tinubu, scions of her former slaves and relatives from Abeokuta also bear it.

“During this association of Momoh Bukar and Efunroye Tinubu, the latter’s name was so pervasive and all-embracing that all within the household perforce assumed the name ‘Tinubu’,” Oyeweso quoted Yemitan to have written. “Included in this household were the children of Momoh Bukar by his other wives and Madame Tinubu’s relatives from Abeokuta who had joined her in Lagos and lived with her. Of course, a number of slaves also assumed the name.”

Nonetheless, based on my own knowledge of the people and sociology of Kanem-Bornu, Momodu Bugara was not Kanuri—at least not on his patrilineal side. He was most certainly a Shuwa Arab. Shuwa Arabs, who have been integral to the Bornu society for centuries and who number a little over a million in contemporary Borno State, are called “Baggara” [i.e., cattle herders] by Middle Eastern Arabs. I am certain that “Bugara” is the corruption of “Baggara” by Lagosians of the 1800s.

Although several Baggara people (whom Kanuris call “Shuwa Arabs”) still speak their dialect of the Arabic language, often called Chadian Arabic in the linguistics literature, many of them have intermarried with the dominant Kanuri people in Borno and have adopted the Kanuri language. The late Abba Kyari was a Kanurized Shuwa Arab/Baggara. For all you know, Abba Kyari and the “Bugara” line of the Tinubu family in Lagos may share distant ancestral links!

Now, why is this history important? For one, it helps to exemplify the complexity and syncretism of ethnic identity in Nigeria. For another it says something about the name “Tinubu” particularly in light of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration that he wants to be the next president of Nigeria.

When Professor Oyeweso delivered his lecture in 2006, Bola Tinubu was the governor of Lagos State. This fact wasn’t lost on Oyeweso.

“Mr. Vice – Chancellor, Sir, today, the current administration of Lagos State is headed by a Tinubu,” he said. “The Tinubu’s [sic] are also generally acknowledged as Lagosians. Another Tinubu headed the Lagos State Civil Service for five years. Others had distinguished themselves in journalism, security and community services, the organized private sector and in other walks of life.”

But this is where Oyeweso got it all wrong. Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not a member of any version of the Tinubu family. He is neither from the original Abeokuta Tinubu bloodline, the “Bugara” pedigree, nor the slave line of descent.

Bola Tinubu is from a town in Osun State called Iragbiji, which is the headquarters of Boripe Local Government Area. His older sister is the mother of Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, the current governor of Osun State. By several credible accounts, including from informants in Iragbiji, Bola Tinubu’s original name was Amoda Lamidi Sangodele.

Amoda is the Yoruba Muslim domestication of Ahmad (which underwent phonetic transformation from Ahmad to Amadu to Amoda). The vowels in the name (“o” and “a” were merely transposed.

Lamidi is the Yoruba Muslim domestication of Abdulhamid. As I wrote in my July 13, 2014, column titled “Top 10 Yoruba Names You Never Guessed Were Arabic Names,” because of Yoruba people’s fondness for the short forms of names, they often dispense with “Abdul” in Muslim names that begin with that prefix. So that leaves us with Hamid.

Now, there is something some people call the “h-factor” in Yoruba, which is the tendency for Yoruba speakers to unconsciously eliminate the “h” sound in words in which it is normally pronounced and to add it to words that don’t have it when they encounter a foreign language. So “eat” is often pronounced as “heat” and “heat” is pronounced as “it.”

Given this phonological characteristic, “Hamid” becomes “Amid,” but the interference of the “l” sound in “Abdul” also causes it to be rendered as “Lamid.” Like in all Niger Congo languages, it’s unnatural for words to not have a terminal vowel in Yoruba, so a terminal vowel is added to Lamid to produce Lamidi.

In other words, in his current name, only “Ahmed” is faithful to his original name since Amoda is the domestication of Ahmad, which is often orthographically Anglicized as “Ahmed.”

Pastor Tunde Bakare helped to push this aspect of Tinubu’s past into the center of national consciousness during a dishonest sermon in December 2020 that pretended to defend Tinubu. In my December 26, 2020, column titled “Bakare Didn’t Defend Tinubu; He Defanged Him,” I unpacked Bakare’s sly unmasking of Tinubu’s identity chicanery.

I wrote: “In Bakare’s political homily, he basically affirmed all the hitherto fringy whispers about Tinubu: that he is from Iragbiji in Osun State; that his current name is not his original name; that he has disowned his biological parents and ‘adopted’ the Tinubu family of Lagos with whom he has zero consanguineal affiliation; that the late legendary Alhaja Abibat Mogaji of Lagos is not Tinubu’s biological mother…”

It’s also intriguing, by the way, that “Mogaji,” the last name of Tinubu’s adopted mother, is the Yoruba domestication of the Hausa name Magaji, which means successor or inheritor. I am curious to know what Alhaja Abibat Mogaji’s ancestral story is. Like her last name, Tinubu’s daughter, Folashade, has become an inheritor of Alhaja Abibat’s “Ìyál’ọ́jà of Lagos” title and privileges.

Well, I can understand Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s opportunistic adoption of the Tinubu name as his family. After all, most people identified with the Tinubu family name in Lagos today aren’t related to Madam Efunroye Tinubu who popularized it in nineteenth-century Lagos.

If descendants of Kanurized Shuwa Arabs (or Baggara) can be Tinubu, why not an Amoda Lamidi Sangodele, a Yoruba man from Iragbiji? But I don’t and can’t understand why he would also “adopt” Alhaja Mogaji as his mother to the point of shunning the funeral of his own biological mother in Iragbiji, according to the late Yinka Odumakin. Well, make of that what you will.

LETTERS: Governor Babagna Umara Zulum should bring Engr. Bababe to order

0

Your Excellency sir, I am humble writing you this letter to draw your attention to a disturbing epoch. I am writing with iota of doubt to whether my letter will reach you or any of your strong cabinets, if it does please act. Because this is the least as I can do as a patriotic Nigerian, and one who loves his state, that is discharging my moral responsibility as an aspiring journalist.

The brusqueness of the chairman while talking to elders is lugubrious and cantankerous. so the BOGIS boss should be mindful of his words, because disrespecting people and elders are not in our culture, we are none with calmness and respect to one another.

therefore your Excellency sir, you should note that if proactive measures are not taken, the nonchalant behavior of the boss toward the good people and law abiding citizens of Borno state who are none for patience and resilience is going to put your political ambition at stake.

The video of the Chairman circulating on social media, while speaking to some elders was diabolic, uncanny and heart wrenching, and this notorious act of his, if not address will be more sinister and pervasive to actualizing your potential of developing Borno state into a state of wonder.

The chairman shouldn’t be carried away by power, because power is transient. It was thesame behavior of his, that brought about chaos in the state and rantings on social media by Christian brothers which lead to even lost of life.

The BOGIS boss should be brought to order, because no profession will allow egotism, he is being appointed to serve the people and not to became a nightmare, which is very unfortunate and disgusting, I makes one feel pain and anguish seeing young people with such attitude.

And also the BOGIS chairman, saying he dosn’t care about any D’arika and Izala, is a pejorative statement not only to the elders but to Islam in general, therefore the chairman should withdraw his statement because is obvious he has no respect to both the two practice religions in the state.

Thank you

Ogun: Two Year Old Girl Shot Dead By Custom Stray Bullet

0

A two-year-old girl was reported to have been shot dead in Ogun State on Thursday, by the Nigerian Customs Service.

The incident occurred  at Itawaya, near the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of the state.

According to DailyPost the child was killed when the NCS men were on the trail of some suspected smugglers.

The incident occurred at a time President Muhammadu Buhari was commissioning projects in other senatorial districts of the state.

It was understood that the child was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead having lost too much blood.

There were gunshot injuries near her armpit, suggesting that the bullet penetrated the area into her body.

A man was also said to sustained gunshot injuries in the incident that raised tension among residents of the area.

Sources said that a customs officer had opened fire while chasing a man suspected to be conveying foreign rice.

“Those customs officers thought he was smuggling rice, so they opened fire on him. It was one of the stray bullets that killed the child and also inflicted injuries on the mother.

“It was after they committed the murder that they realized the man they were chasing was not with rice. That’s what we face here all the time.

“Unfortunately, it happened the day President Buhari was in other zones of the state to commission projects. May God rescue us,” the source said.

Contacted, the NCS Federal Operating Unit (FOU) confirmed mobilising its men to Ogun State but said it could not speak on the incident.

Speaking with our correspondent on phone, the Public Relations Officer of the FOU in Zone A, Theophilus Duniya, said the customs officers were deployed to Ogun to calm a situation.

“I’m aware officers from this unit went for reinforcement to calm a situation down. But for further enquiries and details of that incident, I will advise you to contact the NCS PRO at Ogun command,” Duniya quipped.

Speaking, the NCS in Ogun 1 Area command, Ahmed Oloyede, confirmed the incident, describing it as highly devastating.

He said the command is saddened with the ugly development, adding that investigation has commenced into the incident.

“We are sad and devastated that this happened in the line of duty. It is not our joy. This incident is highly pathetic.

“We sympathise with the family of the minor and the command is making efforts to contact them. The Controller has also ordered an investigation into the incident towards putting an end to similar incidents going forward,” Oloyede said.

Tinubu, Osinbajo, Buhari: A Troika of Treacherous Villains

0

Buhari, Osinbajo, and Tinubu represent a triumvirate. They reinforce, reflect, and inflect each other.

While Osinbajo is clearly a talented, well-spoken man, he is entirely a Tinubu political creation.

It was Tinubu who appointed him as a commissioner in Lagos. It was also Tinubu who facilitated his emergence as Vice President. Politically speaking, without Tinubu, there would be no Osinbajo.

Although Osinbajo is undeniably brilliant (and don’t forget that IBB is brilliant, too!), there are way more brilliant lawyers in Lagos than Osinbajo that Tinubu could have elevated to political visibility, but he chose Osinbajo.

In other words, Osinbajo is an extension of Tinubu. They’re ideologically indistinguishable. They feed off each other’s values. To prefer one to the other is to prefer six to half a dozen, which is another way of making a distinction without a difference.

Both Tinubu and Osinbajo have been important props to Buhari’s ongoing disastrous regime of ungovernance. Without them, Buhari won’t be president.

They also helped plant, grow, and fertilize Buhari’s autocracy and monstrous incompetence every damn step of the way.

In other words, Buhari, Osinbajo, and Tinubu are tarred with the same brush. People who are picking favorites among these monsters of deceit and fraud are not only clueless, they are also enablers of Nigeria’s progressive descent to the nadir of hopelessness.

Our options are not limited to Tinubu, Osinbajo, or even Atiku and all these other old stagers who have been endlessly circulating themselves in the political arena and who’re responsible for the perilous state of the country.

To ask who among these monsters we must choose is to impose unnatural limits on the choices Nigerians have.

Tinubu, Osinbajo, Atiku, and all these other old warhorses of corruption and ineptitude in APC and PDP wanting to be president are some of the worst people to ever get close to power in a nation that is blessed with scores of bright, far-sighted people, but many people are limiting our choices to the worst of us.

When people say Nigerians are their own worst enemies and are complicit in their own oppression, this is what they mean. Nigerians love to create false dilemmas for themselves and claim that they’re compelled to choose the lesser of two evils.

When you’re being roasted in a frying pan, you don’t jump into the fire to seek reprieve. Fire isn’t the only alternative to the frying pan.

The choice mustn’t be between Tinubu and Osinbajo (who’re actually one and the same thing) or between APC and PDP.

If we really want national salvation, we must be prepared to do the hard work of looking beyond the villains who have got us to where we are today.

NAF Rescue Kidnapped Victims

0

Special Forces SF of the Nigerian Air Force NAF have rescued 26 kidnapped victims while on a fighting patrol along Birnin Gwari-Kaduna Road.

Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, made this known in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Edward, the rescue operation occurred when the SF came across five abandoned vehicles with their doors open near Anguwar Yako, an indication of forced removal or evacuation and likely kidnap scene.

“Acting on instincts, the SF began exploiting the general scene of the abduction and extended for about 3 kilometres radius well into the bushes while clearing the general area.

“Upon sighting the SF, about three kidnapped escapees suddenly came out from the bushes. A further search by the SF led to the discovery of four different groups of victims hiding in the bushes.

“After a thorough search further into the hinterland, a total of 26 victims were rescued. On interrogation, the victims were travelling from Birnin Gwari to various locations including Kaduna, Minna and Kano.

“A large number of bandits in three groups suddenly appeared from the bushes from three different directions along the route and surrounded their vehicles.

“However, the kidnappers fled into the bushes with a handful of the victims while the other majority took cover and hid in the bushes until they sighted the SF.”

Meanwhile, the SF have extended their operations within the area with the hope of rescuing the remaining kidnapped victims.

Gabkwet added that those rescued had since been moved to the 461 NAF Hospital, Kaduna, for thorough medical examination.

PDP Cannot Win A Councillorship Seat In Yobe Under Buni

0

It is an undeniable fact that PDP in Yobe is a political lightweight that cannot even provide a strong opposition to the ruling APC let alone win any election in the State.

Most of those who recently defected to PDP in Yobe are political neophytes who cannot win councillorship elections in their respective wards against the APC.

These are green horns whose clout will at best fetch them temporary recognition.

Those celebrating the much-needed exit of some politicians from the APC including a former Gubernatorial aspirant who got 4 votes during the primary election may be unaware of the fact that Gov. Mai Mala Buni has decimated opposition parties in Yobe State.

People should rather celebrate the defection of some political heavyweight who decamped to APC under Gov. Mai Mala Buni including a sitting member of the Yobe State House of Assembly.

BREAKING: Nigeria lifts suspension of Twitter operation

0

The Director General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mallam Kashifu Inuwa made the disclosure in a public statement today

The statement read

FGN LIFTS SUSPENSION OF TWITTER OPERATIONS

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12am tonight, 13th January 2022. The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim. In the Memo, the Minister updates and requests the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement’s recommendation.

You may recall that on 5th June 2021, the FGN suspended the operation of Twitter through an announcement made by the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alh Lai Mohammed. Thereafter, the President constituted a seven-man Presidential Committee to engage Twitter Inc. Subsequently, in its wisdom, the Presidential Committee set a 20-member Technical Committee comprising all relevant government agencies. The Technical Committee engaged and worked directly with the Twitter team. The immediate and remote cause of the suspension was the unceasing use of the platform by some unscrupulous elements for subversive purposes and criminal activities, propagating fake news, and polarising Nigerians along tribal and religious lines, among others. These issues bordering on National Security, Cohesion and the effects of the abuse of the Twitter platform forced the FGN to suspend the operation of Twitter to address the direct and collateral issues around its operations in Nigeria. The new global reality is that digital platforms and their operators wield enormous influence over the fabric of our society, social interaction and economic choices. These platforms can be used as either a tool or a weapon. Every nation is grappling with how to balance its usage efficiently. Without balancing, every citizen’s security, privacy, social well-being, and development are at stake. Therefore, our action is a deliberate attempt to recalibrate our relationship with Twitter to achieve the maximum mutual benefits for our nation without jeopardising the justified interests of the Company. Our engagement has been very respectful, cordial, and successful. The process of resolving this impasse between the FGN and Twitter Inc. has helped lay a foundation for a mutually beneficial future with endless possibilities. Twitter is a platform of choice for many Nigerians ranging from young innovators to public sector officials who find it helpful to engage their audience. Therefore, our engagement will help Twitter improve and develop more business models to cover a broader area in Nigeria. Furthermore, the FGN looks forward to providing a conducive environment for Twitter and other global tech companies to achieve their potential and be sustainably profitable in Nigeria. While appreciating all Nigerians, especially the vibrant Nigerian youths who have borne with the long wait to resolve this impasse, the FGN is happy to say that the gains made from this shared national sacrifice are immeasurable. Some of the gains include: Ongoing economic and training opportunities as the Company continues to consider expanding its presence in Nigeria; Getting a better understanding of how to use the Twitter platform effectively to improve businesses; Revenue generation from the operation of Twitter in Nigeria; Smooth and coordinated relationship between Nigerian Government and Twitter leading to mutual trust; Reduction of cybercriminal activities such as terrorism, cyberstalking, hate speech, etc.; and Working with Twitter and other global companies to build an acceptable code of conduct following the global best practice. The FGN has asked Twitter to fulfil some conditions before restoring its services. These conditions addressed legal registration of operations, taxation, and managing prohibited publication in line with Nigerian laws. Twitter has agreed to meet all the conditions set by the FGN. Consequently, the FGN and Twitter have decided on an execution timeline, which has started this week. Our engagement with Twitter opens a new chapter in global digital diplomacy and sets a new operational template for Twitter to come back stronger for the benefit of Nigerians. The following are the resolutions agreed with Twitter. Inc.:

Twitter has committed to establishing a legal entity in Nigeria during the first quarter of 2022. The legal entity will register with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The establishment of the entity is Twitter’s first step in demonstrating its long-term commitment to Nigeria. Twitter has agreed to appoint a designated country representative to interface with Nigerian authorities. The Global Public Policy team is also directly available through a dedicated communication channel. Twitter has agreed to comply with applicable tax obligations on its operations under Nigerian law. Twitter has agreed to enrol Nigeria in its Partner Support and Law Enforcement Portals. The Partner Support Portal provides a direct channel for government officials and Twitter staff to manage prohibited content that violates Twitter community rules. At the same time, the Law Enforcement Portal provides a channel for the law enforcement agencies to submit a report with a legal justification where it suspects that content violates Nigerian Laws. Taken together, these represent a comprehensive compliance apparatus. Twitter has agreed to act with a respectful acknowledgement of Nigerian laws and the national culture and history on which such legislation has been built and work with the FGN and the broader industry to develop a Code of Conduct in line with global best practices, applicable in almost all developed countries. Therefore, the FGN lifts the suspension of the Twitter operations in Nigeria from midnight of 13th January 2022. We encourage all users of the Twitter platform to maintain ethical behaviour and refrain from promoting divisive, dangerous, and distasteful information on the platform. As patriotic citizens, we need to be mindful that anything illegal offline is also illegal online and that committing a crime using a Nigerian Internet Protocol (IP) is synonymous with committing a crime within our jurisdiction. Considering Twitter’s influence on our democracy, our economy, and the very fabric of our corporate existence as a Nation, our priority is to adapt, not ban, Twitter. The FGN is committed to working with Twitter to do anything possible to help Nigerians align and navigate Twitter algorithmic design to realise its potentials while avoiding its perils. In his approval, the President appreciates the Presidential Committee led by the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alh Lai Mohammed, for the supervisory role and guidance given to the Technical Committee during the engagement. Similarly, the Presidential Committee commends the Technical Committee for a professional, robust and productive engagement with Twitter Inc. It also appreciates Government Regulatory Agencies and Internet Service Providers who implemented the FGN’s directives during the suspension.
