Deborah: Ensure Justice Is Indeed Done – ECWA Tells Tambuwal

0

Following the recent killing of Deborah Samuel by some Muslim youths in Sokoto State, the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has called on Governor Aminu Tambuwal to ensure that perpetrators of the dastardly act face the full wrath of the law according to Daily Post.

ECWA also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the Inspector General of Police and all other relevant security agencies to ensure that all the perpetrators of the dastardly act are “not only fished out but that they are brought to justice according to law”.

The church disclosed this through its President, Rev. Stephen Baba Panya, in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Panya said, “It is with great shock that I received the sad news of the gruesome, heartless and callous murder of yet another young, promising Nigerian girl of the Christian faith, Miss Deborah Yakubu who, until her untimely death on May 12, 2022, was a 200 level Home Economics Student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto.”

Few days ago, Deborah was reportedly murdered in cold blood at the Shehu Shagari College of Education by a group of Muslim students over alleged blasphemy against the Holy Prophet Mohammed.

According to him, “While it is possible and most times, primitively convenient to advance reasons to justify acts of bestiality by just anyone at any time, it must be stressed that bestiality ought not to have any space in any society where decency, decorum and accommodation for diversity reign supreme; and where the rule of law prevails.

“While our faith in this country is still very strong because we know that there are laws that ought to govern the conduct of all citizens like it is in every civilized clime, we are at a loss which provision under our nation’s jurisprudence permits the brutal, senseless and shameful killing and setting ablaze of a fellow Nigerian by any misguided group, under whatever pretext with no one held accountable.

Adding that “The least that Nigerians of all persuasions demand of the Nigerian government at all levels, if its legitimacy must not be put to jeopardy, is the guarantee of security to life and property and the dispensation of justice, equity and fair play to all regardless of religious, ethnic, social or political affiliation.

“The brutal killing and burning of Deborah by some misguided Muslim students is nothing short of overt criminality which we at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) roundly condemn.

“We, therefore, call on the Sokoto State government under the leadership of His Excellency, Aminu Tambuwal to be deliberate in ensuring that no step is left to ensure that justice is not only seen to be done but that it is indeed done.

“We also call on Mr President, Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the Inspector General of Police and all relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that all the perpetrators of this dastardly and despicable act are not only fished out but that they are brought to justice according to law.

“Deborah may just be one young girl whose precious life and ambition have been cruelly cut short, the entire world is watching, waiting and crying out for justice here on earth; otherwise, in heaven.

“In this midnight hour of our nation, at this very trying and agonizing moment, our hearts go to the parents, siblings and entire family of Miss Deborah and all that are grieving her death, we encourage you to take solace in the fact that no matter how it may look, Deborah’s martyrdom shall never be in vain.”

Buhari Begs ASUU To Call Strike Off

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off their strike in the interest of students.

The President made the appeal at the 19th National Productivity Day Celebration and Conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit Award at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

The President recalled his February 1 directive to his Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, Ministers of Education as well as those of Labour and Employment, Adamu Adamu and Chris Ngige respectively to address the concerns of the striking aggrieved lecturers.

ASUU, in a statement on Monday, said since the President’s directive was issued, no meeting had been held to resolve the conflicts.

ASUU said failure of the government to show concern about its demands forced it to extend the three-month-old strike by another three months.

The President also appealed to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to exercise patience as government works to resolve the crisis.

Bauchi Gov Laments Insecurity, Poverty In Nigeria

0

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2023 general election, Bala Mohammed, has lamented the spate of insecurity and poverty in Nigeria.

Mohammed who is the governor of Bauchi State also condemned the constant borrowings by the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), since he took over the leadership of the country in 2015.

The governor decried the situation of the country while speaking with Nasarawa State PDP delegates in Lafia on Tuesday to seek their support for his presidential ambition.

He said, “Insecurity and poverty are everywhere and nobody cares. We are taking loans every day. Our federal, state and local governments may soon collapse because the money that we are generating from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is being used to service depts.

“The road from Abuja to Kano is costing N750 billion. That is over-bloated by the corrupt regime of this administration. These monies can construct all the roads in Northern Nigeria.”

The PDP presidential aspirant said he had great leadership skills to reposition the country if elected into office in 2023 but emphasised that he would obey the party’s decision if the position is zoned to a particular part of the country.

“I am running for President in 2023 because I have so much knowledge of the economy and how to tackle insecurity. I am ready to lead Nigeria to greatness and I know that I have the pedigree, antecedents, and experience to make our country great.

“Some of these ideas are what I have been using to build peace in Bauchi State. That is why we do not have any problems there.

“If I am elected as President in 2023, apart from other great innovations that I will implement to improve our economy, I will redefine our security architecture and ensure that we have a good recruitment process where every portion of the country will be well represented so that our teeming youths will have equal opportunities to get government jobs.

“But if our great party, the PDP says it is zoning the Presidency to a particular place or person through consensus, I will accept. However, I appeal that we should create a level playing field for everybody. What we need is unity, love, justice and equity”, Mohammed said.

Chairman of PDP in the state, Francis Orogu, who spoke on behalf of the delegates, said they were yet to adopt an aspirant they would vote for in the forthcoming presidential primary election but assured that they would support an aspirant who would develop all sectors of the country when elected into office.

I’ll Fight Insecurity With Technology — Saraki

0

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki said he remains the only presidential aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that has the energy, knowledge, experience and capacity to solve the numerous problems bedevilling the country.

Saraki, who spoke when he consulted with the Lagos PDP delegates and other stakeholders, promised to deploy modern technology to tackle the security problems in the country.

His words: “The country needs a bridge builder, and I’m contesting to be that bridge between the North and the South. When you want to unite the country, you must have the capacity to do so.

“I also assure you that we will fight insecurity. We will fight insecurity with knowledge sharing, and with technology. With technology, we won’t be having problems with banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes. I will ensure that we secure this country. I will also ensure that there’s an investment that will give jobs to our people.

“We need a president that has that knowledge because one cannot give what they don’t have. If you don’t have it, you cannot give it to our people. We need a president that has that knowledge, and that experience to change things for the better in this country. You need somebody who has shown that he’s a man of action.

“I can stand for what I believe in. I don’t run from challenges because I’m a solution provider. I set my target and I go all out to achieve it.”

Every office I have occupied, I have left it better than I met it. Today, Nigeria won the fight against polio at the time I was the chairman of the Governor’s Forum.

I can tell you that none of the aspirants both in the PDP and the APC can boast of my kind of experience as a two-term governor, chairman of the Governors Forum, and Senate president. So, I have the experience and the ability to lead the country.

I’m Not Among Aspirants With Fake Promises, Says Tinubu

0

Former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, visited Katsina State on Monday in connection with the forthcoming presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress.

Tinubu who is also a presidential aspirant under the umbrella of the APC met Governor Aminu Masari, the state’s party executives, and delegates to the congress where he solicited their support for him to emerge as the party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

He told them that apart from possessing track records and experience to lead Nigeria, he would serve the country with all his strength, adding that he is not among candidates with fake agendas and promises.

Tinubu added that if he emerges as the party’s presidential candidate and eventually wins the presidential election, he would tackle banditry and other crimes.

Others, he said, will include improving electricity generation and supply, ensure the education of all children irrespective of family background, and seeing to the improvement in infrastructural development of Nigeria.

He also pledged to support agriculture, industrialisation, and move education forward in the country, assuring that incessant strikes by university workers would be over.

The APC leader also declared that anybody can be an aspirant but not everybody can become a leader or the nation’s president.

He said, “Anybody can run. Not everybody can be a leader. There are candidates and there are aspirants. I am a candidate. Whichever way, Nigeria is our nation. God bless this country.

“I am here to meet you, my brothers and sisters, to beg and secure your support for the primaries. We have to stage primaries before one becomes the candidate. You are very important to me for that. I come to unite Nigeria and not to divide Nigeria.

“Anybody can run for the presidency but not everybody can be the President. I am extremely different from other candidates who promise fake agenda. If I become the president, I will take care of all the abandoned projects for the economic development of the country.

“I am contesting to change the country for good and I say you will never regret giving me your support.”

On his part, Masari said most of the problems confronting Nigeria are man-made and can be resolved. He lauded Tinubu for growing Lagos state’s economy and reducing the crime rate in the state.

Masari believed that Tinubu should be given the chance by the APC members and supporters going by his wealth of experience in leadership and the way he managed Lagos as a governor.

Senate Will Bring Back FG/ASUU To Negotiation Table – Lawan

0

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan said on Tuesday that the Senate will intervene in the lingering dispute between the Federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) by bringing back the two parties to the negotiation table.

Lawan made the promise to the officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) who were led to his office by a concerned Methodist Bishop, Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha.

The NANS President, Sunday Asefon who spoke for his other colleagues lamented their continued stay at home and disruption of their academic programme and urged the Senate President to intervene in the dispute between the Federal government and the University teachers.

Responding, the Senate President expressed unhappiness about the turn of events, recalling that the Senate had intervened in the past before everything broke down again.

He however promised that the Senate would wade in again and expressed optimism that the issues would soon be resolved.

“You are in the right place. We are going to intervene. We will make concerted and sustained efforts to bring back ASUU and the Federal government to the negotiating table so that we are able to resolve as quickly as possible those issues that are now very knotty and have stopped our Universities from reopening, that is now making our students walking the streets all over the country.

But I want to appeal to you too, since we are going to make effort to bring back everybody back to the negotiating table, you should give us a chance to do that believing that we are going to find a solution because it is not only enough to bring them back to the negotiating table, but we will participate and I want to make sure that we find the solution when we start the negotiation again.

Now that you have come here, we are going to make sure that everybody in this sector especially those in public sector who has responsibility and mandate perform their functions. We will make sure they do that.

“Because you have come, I think we also have some tonic enough in us. Time is of essence and we must do whatever is necessary to get this issue resolved.

Also responding to the threat by the students to disrupt political activities, Lawan appealed to them to continue in the path of consultation and avoid confrontation.

“I want to also advise, I don’t think it will be necessary to disrupt political activities. We shouldn’t do that and we don’t need to do that.

”What we need to do is to continue to follow the path of consultation, consolidation and avoid confrontation. It is when you emphasise consultation, it is much easier for us to find something that you can consolidate.

“Your prayer that you want the Federal government and ASUU back to negotiate and resolve the issues. We have taken this prayer. We have endorsed it and we will work for it as quickly as possible.

“It is an opportunity for me also to appeal to ASUU to suspend this strike period because there is no way ASUU can negotiate with the Federal government when it is on strike. So it is an opportunity for us to have them, at least create a window, suspend the strike for a certain period and let us see how far we can go.

“I want to be very positive that we are going to resolve this issue as soon as possible by the Grace of God,” Lawan said.

The Senate President said the 2009 agreement which is the Crux of the matter was not properly thought out before it was signed.

“Somebody just wanted ASUU to go back to the classroom and just signed everything there. We must understand that there are things that when we promise we should do, we must do,” Lawan said.

Buhari Needs Tenure Extension To Curb Insecurity – SAN

0

An elder statesman and senior lawyer, Robert Clarke, SAN, Monday in Abuja, said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should serve for an extra six months to give him enough time to address the country’s security woes according to Punch Newspapers.

Clarke stated that with less than a year to the 2023 elections there was not enough time to address the insecurity to ensure a safe exercise, he noted that the Constitution provided the President to extend his tenure for six months in the first instance if conditions were not ripe for an election.

He, however, warned that the nation may not scale through 2023 if nothing was done before the elections.

The Constitution provides that the President can stay longer than eight years. I’ve always said it. It is in the Constitution. If the situation in which we’re in now continues, and it is impossible to vote in the 2023 elections, the Constitution says if a situation persists, the President can stay. Given all insurgencies, kidnappings, and Boko Haram, I don’t think in these areas of Nigeria, we can have a good election.

“So, the fact that the Constitution says the president cannot stay for more than eight years is wrong. Because the same constitution says he can be given six months if those conditions persist.

“Now, I don’t see any green light. I don’t see how what is happening today can be stopped within six months from today or before February next year when the elections will be held.

The alternative then is for Mr. President to continue as president, allow the security watches to carry up the mopping up and Nigeria will become stable.

“Because I swear to God Almighty, without stability in Nigeria, without security, Nigeria is going nowhere. No foreigner will bring his money and put in any business in Nigeria when he knows that any of his expatriates who are sent to Nigeria can be kidnapped at any time.

So, until all these things are sorted out, I don’t see any green light. If nothing happens before the elections, God forbid, this country will go down in flames,” Clark said.

Clarke’s assertion came barely three weeks after legal luminary, Afe Babalola, suggested that the country should suspend its 2023 elections instead and institute an interim government after Buhari’s tenure elapses.

The pro-chancellor of the Afe Babalola University had suggested that the interim government should serve for six months to chart a new course for the country.

He faulted the current 1999 Constitution, saying it no longer reflects the present-day reality of Nigeria.

Babalola argued, “The same Constitution has made politics become not only very attractive but the only lucrative business in Nigeria today.

What this means is that any election that holds under the present scenario will end up producing transactional and recycled leaders, with no ability to turn things around.”

Yobe Education And Mai-Mala Counterproductive Handling by Kasim Isa

0

Since 1999, the people of Yobe have continued to give mandates to the ruling party, what is now known as the All Progressive Congress (APC), with the hope that their lives will be better on all fronts-particularly in the education sector. The Yobe education sector is known to be one of the worst in the nation. This is manifested by a legacy of dilapidated blocks of classrooms; a lack of laboratories; a lack of teachers; no teacher promotions; and the list goes on.

With the emergence of Mai-Mala Buni as the Governor in 2019, he on the inaugural date, in the most dramatic manner, convinced the nation that the education sector in Yobe is rotten-Yes, rotten! He declared what was known as an “emergency” in the sector. He declared his aim and gathered a committee to work out a plan for the sector. Millions of Naira were spent on meetings, travel, and photography on a matter that a single administrative circular could have solved.

ALSO READ: Gov Buni Urges ASUU To Call Off Strike

Two years into the administration of Buni, not a single milestone was made in the education sector. The State Basic Education Board could not recruit trackers, teachers’ promotions stalled, teachers’ salaries were mutilated, and the hardworking principal of secondary schools was bullied by the business that leads the ministry of education. The sad news continues, and the peak was the video of Fika Government Secondary School that rattled the government. One could ask, what exactly is the problem? Is Buni the problem or is his team at the peak of insubordination?

One of the most dramatic events that put the Yobe education sector in the spot was the case of the Buni Foreign Scholarship Scheme (BFSS), a scheme managed by a few of Buni’s trusted men. BFSS is characterised by poor stipend payment, poor academic quality, and so on. Today, the BFSS is still a problem that will continue to make the Buni government unpopular and will give the opposition a chance to punch the APC hard. The local scholarship allowance is also an area where there is a hitched to pin network of students and their families to dispense protest votes against Buni and give the upper hand to opposition parties like the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). It was only last week when NNPP made a move to consolidate its gains by inviting Stand Up and Be Involved (SUBI) to adopt its party and contest all elections. Should this partnership work as planned, the APC is likely to experience the most effective and fierce opposition in its history in Yobe State.

The local scholarship allowance payment has been epileptic, inconsistent, and marred by a lack of competence in leadership. One can easily note that this administration has provided the most inexperienced and inefficient leadership of the board in the history of Yobe. No one knows if the Yobe State Scholarships Board (YSSB) has access to its budgetary allocations adequately. If in any case, it has access to funds, who can defend Buni or his proxy at the head of the YSSB for the lack of payment of local scholarship allowances? An act that even the military administration did well in Yobe!

One might wonder if the reason for paying for local scholarships was related to the massive fund-raising effort for the 2023 elections. It is wonderful and only in APC’s Yobe State that you can find people heading a government parastatal that failed to perform in contesting elections. Does this mean that Buni is impressed with the performance of the scandal-marred YSSB?

Buni needs to know that there is significant dissatisfaction with his administration and his team. Everything that the government does seems suspicious. This includes the maiden Education Appeal Fund, where billions of Naira were accumulated. There is speculation on the ground, whether Buni knew or knew not, that the education fund was a cover to grasp financial muscles to fight for the 2023 elections. This sentiment, whether true or political, makes up the opposition, and the chances to pin the people against the APC are high. It has always been easy to blackmail a government that cares less about its spending, its budget performance, and its revenue base.

It is, however, clear that whatever sterling personal qualities a governor may have, of which Buni has many, the chances of failure can be significant. The popular opinion is that Buni is highly unlikely to succeed with his existing team. Buni must change gears and relate to reality on the ground, and begin to listen to others rather than his yes-men. Those who tell him that he is always right even when he is certainly wrong—for no one can always be right. We are calling for Buni to begin to search for a new effective team should the 2023 election tide blow in his favour.

Whereas the YSSB Chairman has a dual and conflicting constituency, that rests with the constituents to decide. Ultimately, the YSSB has failed the children of the poor.

“BREAKING: Jonathan disowns northern group, says APC form bought without his consent

0

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he has no link to the northern coalition that purchased the presidential nomination and express of interest forms of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for him.

Earlier on Monday, the coalition procured the forms for Jonathan from the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

But in a statement issued on Monday night by Ikechukwu Eze, his spokesman, the former president said he didn’t authorise the purchase.

It has come to our notice that a group has purportedly purchased Presidential Nomination and Expression of Interest forms, of the All Progressives Congress APC, in the name of former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

We wish to categorically state that Dr. Jonathan was not aware of this bid and did not authorize it.

We want to state that if the former President wanted to contest an election, he would make his intentions clear to the public and will not enter through the back door.
While we appreciate the overwhelming request by a cross-section of Nigerians, for Dr. Jonathan to make himself available for the 2023 Presidential election, we wish to state, that he has not in anyway, committed himself to this request. Buying a presidential aspiration form in the name Dr. Jonathan without his consent, knowing the position he had held in this country, is considered an insult to his person. The general public is therefore advised to disregard it.”
