I’ll Remain In APC Till I Die, Says El-Rufai

0

Kaduna state Governor Nasir El-Rufai has disclosed that he is one of the 37 people that formed the nucleus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and so he considers the party as one of his children.

The governor who spoke in a live media chat that was broadcast on all Kaduna-based radio stations on Wednesday night, dispelled rumour that he plans to defect to another party, over the choice of a running mate.

El-Rufai vowed that he will remain in APC till the end of his life, adding that ‘’the moment I leave APC, then I have quit politics altogether.’’

On the issue of removing the APC flag on his official car, the governor clarified that it is the convention that once it is 6pm, every flag is either lowered if it is foisted on a pole, or covered if it is on a vehicle

The governor said that this is not the first time that rumour mongers have associated him with all manner of plots or speculations, adding that ‘’they said I wanted to be president, then they came round to say I wanted to be running mate, now it is DG Campaign.’’

El-Rufai also reiterated that Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, former Commissioner of Planning and Budget, is still the APC candidate of Kaduna Central senatorial district, debunking the rumour that he planned to displace his protegee.

According to him, politics is about service and it is not the central focus of his life as people think.

ASUU Extend Strike By Four Weeks

0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended the ongoing strike by another four weeks.

ASUU president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed the union’s decision in a press statement on Monday.

He said the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union took the decision after extensive deliberations on government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing the issues it raised.

“An emergency meeting of the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) held at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja, on Sunday, 31st July 2022. The meeting was called to review developments since NEC’s resolution to extend its roll-over strike action by another 12 weeks with effect from May 2022.”

“The NEC meeting took place against the backdrop of government’s obligations as spelt out in the Memorandum of Action (MOA) it signed with ASUU on 23rd December 2020. Specifically, NEC recalled that government’s failure to conclude the process of renegotiating the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, deploy the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), pay outstanding arrears of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), release agreed sum of money for the revitalization of public universities (Federal and States), address proliferation and governance issues in State Universities, settle promotion arrears, release withheld salaries of academics, and pay outstanding third-party deductions led to the initial declaration of the roll-over strike on 14th February 2022.

“NEC viewed with seriousness the recent directive given by the President and Visitor to all Federal Universities that the Minister of Education, in consultation with other government officials, should resolve the lingering crisis and report to him within two weeks. The Union wonders why it had taken five full months and needless muscle-flexing for government to come to the realisation of the need for honest engagement.

“NEC acknowledged the growing understanding of the issues and the groundswell of support for the Union’s principled demand for globally competitive university education in Nigeria. Nigerian universities must not be reduced to constituency projects that merely exist on paper and our scholars must be incentivised to stay back and do what they know best, here in Nigeria.

“NEC appreciated the historic nationwide protest of 26th and 27th July 2022 organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations (CSO) to further create awareness on the antics of the Nigerian ruling class to destroy public education. ASUU renews its commitment to the struggles of NLC in championing the cause of the working and suffering Nigerians.

“NEC observed that non-signing of the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement more than one month after it was concluded by Professor Nimi Briggs-led Committee is further tasking the patience of ASUU members nationwide.

“NEC further observed that the ongoing trial of the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris, on allegation of monumental fraud has vindicated ASUU’s rejection of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information (IPPIS). The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is enjoined to release reports of the latest tests on the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) vis-a-vis IPPIS without further delay. ASUU shall resist any attempt to truncate the deployment of UTAS with all legitimate means available to the Union.

“NEC noted that cumulative indifference by the political class gave vent to a pervasive atmosphere of insecurity which now threatens the seamless provision of educational services in the country. The unceremonious closure of educational institutions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), following the recent attack on Presidential Guards, betrays a panicky measure to addressing a malignant ailment. Nothing short of a comprehensive overhaul of the security architecture of the country will sustainably address the problem.

“Following extensive deliberations and taking cognisance of Governmen€s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MOA), NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues. The role-over strike action is with effect from 12.01 am on Monday, 1st August 2022”, the statement read.

Peter Obi Lacks Experience To Lead Nigeria, Says Okowa

1

The governor of Delta, Ifeanyi Okowa ,saysP Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), does not have the needed experience to lead Nigeria.

Okowa, who is the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), spoke in an interview with BBC pidgin.

While admitting that Obi has experience from being a former governor, he, however, added that it is not “deep” enough to lead Nigeria.

“I did not say he won’t have any votes, he will have. But what I’m saying is that he’s not a new candidate. It has not been long since he left PDP. You know he was in APGA before, from APGA he came to PDP. It hasn’t been long since he left (PDP) so he cannot say anything about PDP because that’s where he was before,” he said.

“Some of us are still here. At every party, there are good people and bad people. But today’s Nigeria is very troubled and we need the right person. That is why I am appealing to our youths be wise and vote well, they should not be blinded by the concept of a false change because that is how they raved on Jonathan in 2015.

“His (Obi) previous experience is not enough for this one (presidency), it will be hard. His experience is not deep enough. Even as a current governor ruling in a time of crisis, I know how hard it is. I even want to learn under Atiku because he has experience with the federal government. The thing is not easy. For them to have handled the economy at that time and made it something better, offering hope, creating jobs, and filtering the society, was not easy because it’s a bigger thing. So someone is supposed to learn through that. If you look at Obi’s experience you’ll know it’s small.

Speaking on the crisis in the PDP, Okowa said Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, is his friend and that he is making an effort to reach out to him.

“We’ve been talking internally, everything is being settled. You know that when something happens and everybody can’t agree, it’s settled bit by bit. That is what we’re still working on from the inside. We are finding a way to talk I’ll say, he is my friend, I am his friend, and we will find a way to talk,” he said.

“Atiku has said his own version of what happened, and I am sure that version he said is the true position. I am also not saying that Wike is lying, but if someone carries their anger, it is important to air your views. For us in the party, it’s about how to bring everybody together, how all of us can work together. Wike is still a very important member of the party, he has worked so hard for the party as many of us have worked hard too so we pray that everything comes together and we talk. I’m sure very soon we’ll be sitting down.

The decision of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP, to name Okowa as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election caused division in the party.

Some party stakeholders, including Samuel Ortom, governor of Benue, had expressed concerns over Atiku’s decision to ignore Wike, who was recommended for the position by the party’s national working committee (NWC). Wike placed second in the party’s presidential primary election which took place in May.

But in a recent interview, Atiku said the panel did not choose Wike and that he did not pick Wike as his running mate because he wanted someone he could work with “amicably”.

Responding to the claims made by the PDP presidential candidate in the interview, Wike accused Atiku of lying, saying he would speak on the matter soon.

PDP, NNPP Members Dump Parties For APC In Yobe

0

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on Friday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State.

Mamman Mohammed, Director General, Press and Media Affairs, to Governor Mai Mala Buni disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Damaturu, the state capital.

Buni, while receiving the new entrants, charged them to work for the unity of the party and its success in 2023.

The governor was joined by the State APC Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Gadaka, and his Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Alhaji Aji Bularafa.

Gov Zulum Gifts N5m To Almajiri Who Made Hand Tractor In Borno

0

The Governor of Borno State Babagana Umara Zulum has gifted the sum of five million Naira to one almajiri in Borno who made a farming plough machine manually pushed for tilling of farmlands towards planting.

Ploughs are usually attached to tractors, other means of transport, or manually dragged in farms.

As a Professor of Irrigation Farming, Zulum was excited that the 25-year-old Laminu Mohammed who hails from Gubio Local Government in northern Borno has never attended any formal school except traditional Islamic education called Tsangaya and popularly called almajiri system across northern Nigeria.

Laminu used components of a lister engine which is originally made for water pump to construct a plough which works like a tractor that is pushed by hand.

Informed of Laminu’s talent by a Government official, Zulum invited Laminu and during technical interaction the almajiri proved his skills for the invention after which he was rewarded with N5m

The Governor said the amount is aimed to inspire the ‘unschooled engineer’ to produce more ploughs and possibly other agricultural machineries that can serve farmers in Borno.

Zulum’s support for Laminu came barely two weeks after MAIDAWAAREWA reported that the Governor approved over N5m for a 13-year old primary school boy who used mud to copy-design Borno’s first flyover located along the Maiduguri – Gamboru Ngala highway

In another vain Zulum had presented five mini buses and N20m cash to a young Borno man who specializes in converting buses with petrol engines into solar-powered electric vehicles.

Ngige Gives Fresh Update On ASUU Strike

0

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has provided the latest update on the ongoing strike action in the university system, insisting that negotiations were ongoing between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Ministry of Education.

Ngige, however, warned that negotiating with ASUU without simultaneously doing so with the other university-based unions only delayed the strike as it would not achieve a quick resolution of the issues.

He also declared that Nigeria is broke and may be unable to finance its capital projects come 2023 if it fails to reduce the cost of government and remove fuel subsidies, among other actions.

Ngige stated this at a press briefing to commemorate the 2022 World Day Against Child Labour in Abuja on Thursday.

He said, “I can tell you that Nigeria is broke. There is no money to fund capital projects next year. As you can see, the dollar that has been hovering around N500 and N600 is now above N700. The truth is that there is no money anywhere. The money that the FAAC (Federation Account Allocation Committee) has been sharing is money from taxes, customs, and other revenue-generating agencies.

“The National Nigerian Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) no longer remits money to FAAC. So, the situation calls for patriotism from all Nigerians. The lack of money to fund capital projects would have an implication on the capacity to create jobs. If jobs are not created, poverty will increase in the country.”

He added, “I have been Minister of Labour and Employment for seven years. Before, we negotiated with ASUU alone, which then suspended its strike. But NASU, SSANU and NAAT were on strike. The non-teaching unions locked the classrooms and lecture theatres. They also shut down electricity and water supply to the universities, which almost led to outbreaks on those campuses.

“So, what I am saying is that negotiation with ASUU will not lead to the reopening of the universities. All of them must be involved in the negotiations.”

Tinubu, Most Qualified Presidential Candidate – Wase

0

The deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Ahmed Idris Wase, has said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the most qualified of all candidates running to become Nigeria’s President in 2023.

Wase said none has the level of political and leadership credentials possessed by the APC candidate.

To this end, he assured the APC candidate and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima of his total support in the build-up to the 2023 general election and beyond.

While receiving the leadership of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (ABAT) Support Group on a courtesy call in his office, Wase said “Of all the candidates in other political parties, none has the qualities and capacity of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

He continued, “I want to assure you that we in the House of Representatives, particularly members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), shall collaborate with every organisation to ensure victory for Tinubu/Shetima ticket.”

He, however, charged the group to campaign for Asiwaju everywhere in Nigeria saying “We have good products to sell, this is somebody that had turned around the economy of Lagos within a short time and has built people across the country, irrespective of region or religion.

“I charge you all to go out in full force with your head high seeking for those votes as you have a good product to sell to Nigerians. I urged you not to relent in ensuring the victory for our candidates.”

Earlier, the national coordinator of the organisation, Hon. Oyinkansola Okiwuyi, said they were at the National Assembly to seek the support and cooperation of the deputy speaker and to also inform him about the strategy they are using to galvanise and solicit for votes.

He said the organisation is seeking not only support for Tinubu but the entire APC structure so that the party will have an overwhelming majority in states and National Assembly.

Financial Leakages Fuelling Insecurity In Nigeria, Says Rauf Aregbesola

1

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has linked the spate of insecurity in the country to financial leakages.

According to him, criminals are still in business of the money getting into their hands.

The Minister added that insecurity would drastically reduce when the sources of their finances are blocked.

Aregbesola, according to a statement on Friday by the Director of Press, Ministry of Interior, Afonja Ajibola, spoke at the formal inauguration of a 10-member Inter-Ministerial Committee, set up to implement the adoption and implementation of the assigned roles to the Ministry of Interior, on the Financial Action Task Force.

The statement partly read, “Let me reiterate the Federal Government’s unflinching commitment to the eradication of money laundering, financing of terrorism and related corrupt practices. This has made us willing and active partner with other African and indeed global partners in this advocacy and fight.

“Some of the security challenges we face at the moment could be resolved if the financial lifeline of the actors are cut off. That some of them are still in business suggests strongly that they have strong internal or external financial leakages.”

The minister promised that Nigeria would work with the International Community to overcome the challenge, adding that “money laundering undermines the legitimate private sector and the integrity of financial markets, loss of control of economic policy, causes economic distortion and instability as well as loss of revenue, among other untoward consequences.”

The 10-Member Committee is headed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Shuaib Belgore.

The committee is expected to report to the Honourable Minister every two weeks for progress assessment.

Court Grants Suspended AGF, Others To Bail

0

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has granted the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Idris Ahmed, and his co-defendants’ bail on terms and conditions given by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Adeyemi Ajayi, in her ruling, ordered that the defendants not leave the Federal Capital Territory without the court’s permission.

The court threatened to revoke the bail of any of them who failed to appear for trial.

The court also stated that the defendants should sign an undertaken that they will abide by the bail conditions by the EFCC.

According to the ruling, the defendants should not have and should not procure alternate passports until the case is expensed, having deposited their original passports to the commission.

The judge ruled on grounds that the allegations against the defendants are yet to be proven.

The court also stated that in line with the rule of law, the defendants are entitled to bail despite allegations against them since the prosecution did not mention that the defendants misbehaved while in EFCC custody.

The trial began immediately after the bail ruling.

I Will Sack All Kaduna Lecturers, Says Gov El-Rufai

0

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has threatened to sack all the Kaduna State University (KASU) lecturers if they continue to observe the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

MAIDAWAAREWA reports that ASUU has been on strike since February over the failure of the federal government to meet its demands.

Many attempts by the government to make the lecturers return to the classrooms have not yielded results as of today.

Just on Monday, labour unions commenced solidarity protests in some parts of the country with ASUU.

However, speaking on a radio programme in Kaduna on Wednesday, El-Rufai told the lecturers to return to classrooms in order to avoid having their positions declared vacant, adding that KASU lecturers had no reason to join any strike.

According to him, ASUU had a problem with the federal government, not the state government.

He said, “The Acting Vice Chancellor has assured me that they will resume, but I have asked them to find out if they actually resumed work, because I initially instructed that their salary be stopped. But I was later told they didn’t join the strike, so I asked that it should be investigated and those that collected salary and joined the strike will be asked to refund the salary.

“This is because Nigeria’s law says ‘no work, no pay’. This is the law. So whoever joined the strike will not be paid a salary. We have been telling the KASU lecturers that they have no problem with the State government. ASUU’s problem is with the Federal government. Therefore, why will our staff who have no problems with us join the strike?

“If this continues, I will wake up one day to sack them all, I swear to God. We will sack them all and declare their positions vacant on the pages of newspapers. They once did the same thing and we gave them warning, now they repeated it. I’m only waiting to receive the report from the commissioner for education. I swear to God, we will sack all those that joined the strike if they refuse to resume work.”
