Six people have died after a truck crashed into a tricycle in Hayin Gada, Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The crash happened on 4 September along the Hayin Gada axis, according to the Adamawa State Police Command.
Police said the victims were taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Three of those killed have reportedly been identified as students of Modibbo Adama University in Yola. They include Edoche Sylvester Oche and Hamdiya, a student of the Faculty of Life Sciences, Department of Plant Science.
The crash has prompted renewed concern among residents about road safety along the route, where community members say a number of fatal crashes have occurred since August.
Some residents have called for restrictions on the movement of heavy-duty trucks and tricycles along the affected section of the road.
Others have urged the Adamawa State Government to expand the road and increase the deployment of traffic and security personnel to monitor motorists and enforce traffic regulations.
Confirming the latest crash, the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Njuroje, said preliminary reports showed that six people had died.
He said officers from the Girei Divisional Headquarters, Federal Housing and the Central Motor Traffic Division were deployed to the scene to evacuate the victims and restore the flow of traffic.
The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police, CP Kabir Umar Hassan, had expressed condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the repose of their souls.
He urged residents to remain calm and advised motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and avoid speeding.
The deaths have left the families of the victims, their friends and members of the university community mourning.
Residents are now calling for urgent measures to improve road safety along the route and prevent further loss of life.
