Troops of the Nigerian military, supported by fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force, have been mobilised following a suspected terrorist attack on communities on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Security sources said the attackers, believed to be members of Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), launched the assault late at night, prompting an immediate military response.
Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire across several neighbourhoods, including Ajilari Cross, Dala, and Bulamari, triggering panic as many people fled their homes in search of safety.
A resident of Bulamari, located near Dala community, told reporters that military personnel had begun taking positions while the sound of gunfire intensified in the area.
“As I am speaking with you now, people are fleeing their homes for safety, but we don’t know exactly what is happening,” the source said.
A correspondent in the city’s central area also observed a military fighter jet hovering over Maiduguri while sporadic gunshots continued to echo across parts of the city.
Security sources confirmed that troops are currently engaging the attackers, while air assets have been deployed to support ground operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact circumstances surrounding the attack and the number of casualties, if any, could not be independently verified.
