Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has approved the release of more than ₦3 billion to settle outstanding entitlements owed to staff of Taraba State University (TSU), in a move aimed at resolving the ongoing strike by university unions.
The approval is part of efforts to end the indefinite strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union at the institution.
According to government officials, the governor approved the immediate release of ₦200 million, alongside a monthly payment of ₦100 million starting from April 2026, to offset accumulated end-of-service benefits, salary arrears and other outstanding financial obligations owed to staff.
The intervention was announced during the governor’s visit to the university in Jalingo on Thursday, March 12, 2026, where he met with union leaders and university management in a bid to reach a lasting resolution to the dispute.
During the visit, Kefas—who serves as the visitor to the university—reportedly signed documents authorising the payment in the presence of the TSU ASUU Chairman, Mbave Joshua Garba, and other union representatives.
The governor also approved the inclusion of retired staff of the university in the state pension scheme and directed the payment of outstanding entitlements owed to deceased staff members.
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee of the university unions held a congress on Thursday evening to deliberate on the development. As of the time of filing this report, the outcome of the meeting had not been officially announced.
However, a senior staff member of the institution who spoke on condition of anonymity said there are indications that the strike may be suspended soon, paving the way for the resumption of academic activities at the university.
