All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants in Yobe State have rejected what they described as a purported endorsement of a consensus candidate, insisting that the process did not comply with Nigeria’s Electoral Act 2026 and the party’s constitution.

In a communiqué issued after a meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, the aspirants said any attempt to impose a consensus candidate outside due process was “unacceptable” and inconsistent with established legal and party guidelines.

They called for strict adherence to the provisions governing consensus arrangements, stressing that such mechanisms must be transparent, inclusive and in line with statutory requirements to ensure credibility in the selection of the party’s governorship flagbearer in the state.

The group further stated that should consensus efforts fail, the APC must conduct free, fair and transparent direct primaries in accordance with its electoral guidelines.

The aspirants also raised concerns over the conduct of the Yobe State APC chairman, alleging partisanship and questioning his neutrality in overseeing the primary process. They said this had undermined their confidence in his ability to supervise a credible election.

On that basis, they demanded the chairman’s withdrawal from all matters relating to the conduct and supervision of the party’s governorship primary in the state.

Despite internal disagreements, the aspirants reaffirmed their support for the national leadership of the APC and expressed backing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 presidential election.

The communiqué was issued in Abuja on 7 May 2026.
