A civil society group, Northern Nigeria Voice, has raised concerns over what it described as the alleged targeting of opposition leaders from Northern Nigeria by federal anti-corruption agencies.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Abubakar H. Muhammad, Lead of Northern Nigeria Voice, and dated March 25, 2026., the group accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of being used as instruments of political pressure, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles.
“The ongoing trials of northern politicians cannot be divorced from political reality. What we are witnessing goes beyond accountability and raises concerns about the silencing of opposition voices,” the statement said.
The group cited cases involving prominent political figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, alleging that their legal challenges followed political disagreements or shifts in alignment.
According to the group, these developments suggest a broader pattern that could weaken political opposition ahead of future elections.
“The opposition is being systematically weakened through prolonged legal battles and institutional pressure. This trend raises concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process,” the statement added.
The group further urged the federal government to ensure that anti-corruption agencies operate independently and in line with their statutory mandates, without political interference.
It also called on civil society organisations, the international community, and other stakeholders to monitor developments closely and advocate for the protection of democratic institutions.
“The stability of the political system depends on fairness, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. These principles must be upheld to sustain public confidence in governance,” the statement concluded.
