Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has awarded N10 million each, laptops, and full scholarships for higher education to three students from the state who emerged winners at the TeenEagle World Competition held in London.
The beneficiaries—Nafisa Abdullahi, Rukaiya Mohammed Fema, and Hadiza Kashim Kalli—were honoured at a grand reception held at the newly inaugurated Biomedical Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) at Yobe State University, Damaturu.
Governor Buni described the students’ achievement as a reflection of his administration’s sustained investment in education, with particular emphasis on girl-child education. He commended the champions for their discipline, hard work, and determination, noting that their success has placed Yobe State on the global academic map.
In recognition of the role played by their teachers, the governor also presented laptops to Haseebullah Jogi, former Principal of the Girls’ Section, and Abdullateef Abdulkareem, an English teacher who contributed to mentoring the students.
Governor Buni further disclosed that the state government spends about N5 billion annually on school fees at Tulip International College and N5.3 billion yearly on feeding students in public schools across the state. He added that Yobe State also covers NECO, WAEC, NABTEB, and NBAIS examination fees for students in public schools to reduce the financial burden on parents and expand access to education.
“These interventions are deliberate efforts to ensure that no child in Yobe State is denied education because of financial constraints,” the governor said.
Following the announcement, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Assoc. Prof. Abba Idris Adam, presented dummy cheques to the awardees on behalf of the state government.
The event drew senior government officials, education stakeholders, academics, parents, and students, and was widely hailed as a landmark celebration of academic excellence at the newly commissioned BioRTC facility.
