Nearly 1,000 rice farms have been destroyed by flooding in Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, raising fears of food shortages and economic hardship for affected farmers.
The Chairman of Babura LGA, Suleiman Daudu Babura, confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists on Wednesday. He listed the affected villages to include Kwagga, Martini, Fadibara, Kuzunzumi, Jikan Kanwa, Fln, Dangaigai, Dankarda, Karfawa Kanawa, Burukum Gari Wato, Bata, S/Baka, Shashatu, Burukum Fln, and Kurtulla.
A resident, Abdurahman Maikano, lamented that the disaster could worsen poverty in the area, calling on the state government and relevant agencies for urgent assistance. Another victim, Suraja Muhammad, noted that such flooding occurs almost every year and urged authorities to engage experts to curb recurring losses.
Meanwhile, another council chairman, Malam Hamisu Muhammad Garu, sympathized with the victims and assured them of the state government’s commitment to provide relief and long-term support.
