Buni’s runway lighting project sets stage for 24-hour operations
The Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport, Damaturu, has taken a major leap forward as the Yobe State Government completes its state-of-the-art runway ground lighting system, unlocking the potential for round-the-clock operations.
Under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni, the upgrade paves the way for both passenger and cargo flights to operate at night, boosting the state’s aviation profile and strengthening its role in regional trade and logistics.
During a night inspection of the newly completed project, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, said the Buni administration prioritized the lighting installation to enhance air safety, attract more airlines, and stimulate economic activity.
“This is about more than flights at night; it’s about opening new frontiers for commerce, tourism, and emergency services,” Wali remarked.
The inspection team also included the Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Hon. Mohammed Mohammed Bara; Commissioner for Information, Hon. Abdullahi Bego; and Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs, Ustaz Babagana Mallam Kyari, among others.
With the lighting system fully operational, the Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport is now positioned as a strategic gateway, linking Yobe to national and global markets, driving commerce, and opening new opportunities for the state’s future growth.
