Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has categorically dismissed recent claims by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, alleging that he failed to resign from his position as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State before contesting the 2023 governorship election.

Wike, in a recent statement, had cited Kefas as an example to justify the decision of the PDP’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to remain in office while vying for the party’s gubernatorial ticket in Imo State. According to Wike, Kefas retained his chairmanship while running for governor, suggesting a precedent.

However, in a swift and pointed response, Governor Kefas provided documentary evidence to debunk the allegation, insisting that he formally resigned from the party chairmanship in May 2022, well ahead of the PDP primaries and the general elections.

To substantiate his claim, Governor Kefas made public a resignation letter dated May 17, 2022, addressed to the then PDP National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. The letter was also copied to the then Governor of Taraba State, Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku, and the Acting Chairman of the PDP in Taraba.

In the letter, Kefas wrote:

“I wish to use this medium to notify our great party of my resignation from the position of Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Taraba State to enable me pursue my political aspirations, as permitted by the constitution of our great party. I sincerely appreciate the rare opportunity given to me to serve at the highest political party office in the State and acknowledge the immense support and encouragement I received from all stakeholders.”

Governor Kefas described Wike’s assertion as “misleading and factually inaccurate,” urging party leaders and the public to rely on verified facts rather than political conjecture.

The controversy has sparked renewed conversations around internal party rules and ethical standards in political contests, particularly regarding officeholders seeking elective positions. Governor Kefas’ prompt clarification appears aimed at preserving his integrity and reaffirming his adherence to party processes.
