Two people were confirmed death after a car carrying passengers was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Boko Haram insurgents along the Maiduguri-Damboa road in Borno.

According to YERWA EXPRESS NEWS, The explosion occurred on Monday when the vehicle matched on an IED planted by the insurgents.

Two passengers were confirmed killed while two others sustained various degrees of injuries and were taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The road, a supply corridor of perishable goods into Maiduguri, the state capital, has been targeted by militants using IEDs against civilians and security forces.

This recent incident was followed by an April 12 attack on a commercial bus on the same road, which killed eight passengers and injured others.

A security source said that military clearance operations are needed before the rainy season complicates detection of IEDs efforts.

‘Recent blasts on the Damboa-Maiduguri axis show the problem,’ the source said.

‘To advance into areas like Sambisa Forest, troops must clear IEDs from roads.’

The source noted militants mark bomb sites with objects like shoes or money to avoid their own traps while misleading others.
