A devastating fire erupted in the early hours of Wednesday at the iconic Jos Terminus Market in Plateau State, reducing hundreds of stalls and millions worth of goods to ashes.

The blaze, which reportedly began from the section of the market housing second-hand clothes, quickly spread to adjoining stalls, catching many traders off guard as it raged overnight into the morning.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with thick smoke and flames engulfing vast sections of the popular market. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown as of the time of filing this report.

Firefighters arrived shortly after the blaze broke out but struggled to contain the inferno due to limited access and intensity of the flames. Meanwhile, distraught traders watched helplessly as their livelihoods were consumed, some collapsing in tears amid the rising smoke.

“I just restocked yesterday. Everything is gone,” lamented one trader, Aminu Bala. Another victim, Adamu, could only mutter in disbelief, “I am finished.”

Security personnel have been deployed to manage the crowd and secure the area, as fears of looting and unrest grew with the morning light.

While no official casualty figure has been confirmed, the Plateau State Government is expected to launch an immediate investigation into the incident. Affected traders are now pleading for urgent support and relief to recover from the massive loss.

As the sun rose over Jos, the once-vibrant marketplace stood in ruins, a haunting reminder of the fragility of small businesses and the urgent need for improved fire safety measures in Nigeria’s major trading centers.
