Yobe: 7th Assembly holds valedictory session, recounts achievements

The former Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly, Ahmed Lawan Mirwa has described the 7th Assembly as the most peaceful in the history of the state.

Mirwa made the assertion at a valedictory session of the 7th Assembly, held at the chambers of the House in Damaturu.

Mirwa who spoke at length on the achievements recorded in the last four years, said the 7th Assembly has passed thirty-eight bills and sixty-one resolutions that have had a direct bearing on the lives of people in the state.

The outgoing speaker commended the state Governor, Mai Mala Buni for maintaining a cordial working relationship between the legislature and the executive.

The lawmaker thanked members of the House for giving him an opportunity to serve as speaker of the House for a period of four years.

He also applauded the efforts of the legislative staff for giving him the maximum support and cooperation and urged them to give the incoming 8th Assembly the same cooperation for the development of the state

In their separate remarks, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mohammed Isa Bello; House Leader, Bukar Mustapha; Chief Whip, Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa and Bulama Bukar commended the outgoing speaker of the 7th Assembly Rt. Hon. Ahmed Mirwa for his good leadership which delivered quality legislation and effective oversight.

Recall that, in the last Assembly election, the outgoing Speaker of the Assembly lost his seat to a 33-year-old Musa Lawan Majakura of PDP in Nguru II constituency.

Mirwa has been in the Assembly for about 20 years.

The defeat is considered by many as one of the major upsets in the political history of the state.
