Zulum Approves 65 Years Retirement Age For Teachers, Warned Against Absenteeism

The Governor of Borno state, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the retirement age of sixty five and forty years length of service for teachers of basic and secondary schools in the state.

Governor Zulum made this known at an event to mark the 2022 World Teachers Day in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Education Alhaji Lawan Wakilbe, said a bill to that effect had been transmitted to the Borno state House of Assembly.

He said additional bills have been sent to the Assembly for the domestication of some Federal government laws to enhance the welfare and professionalism of teachers.

Governor Zulum also announced the setting up of an appeal committee to look into the concerns of teachers affected by the verification exercise.

According to him, the state government has commenced the payment of minimum wage to over five thousand four hundred primary school teachers who passed the competence test.

The Governor warned the teachers against absenteeism and involvement in partisan politics, explaining that only ten percent of teachers attend classes.

Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers Comrade Jibrin Mohammed , called on the state and local government to invest more in public education and teachers for the betterment of the society.

He urged the state government to pay the back log of annual increment, implementation of minimum wage to the seven thousand teachers and implementation of promotion to both primary and post primary teachers.
