Chairman of the Joint Service Union, PSC chapter, on Thursday, disclosed that members of the Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission (PSC), will embark on an indefinite strike following the taking over of the commission’s duty by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba.

Announcing the strike action in a statement on Thursday, Chairman of the Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr Adoyi Adoyi, said the strike action would begin on Monday August 29, 2022.

According to him, “We’re embarking on an indefinite strike from Monday, August 29, to show how discontent with the way the PSC is being run by the chairman of the commission, and the flagrant disregard for the constitution, the court of law, and the PSC by the IGP, Usman Baba.

“The duties of the PSC are spelt out in the constitution, but the IGP has disregarded all of that, and has taken over the duties of the commission, adding that he appoints and promotes at will as opposed to what is stated in the constitution.”

Adoyi, while quoting the constitution stated that the appointment, promotion, and recruitment of police officers and constables are the prerogative of the PSC, not the IGP.

However, the decision to embark on strike was to strike a balance between the workers of the commission, the Chairman of the commission, Mr Musiliu Smith, and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, on which body should be responsible for recruitment, promotion, and appointment of constables and officers.

Recalls that the PSC had announced it had opened portal for the recruitment of constables. But, less than 24 hours later, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters asked members of the public to disregard the portal and asked all applicants to wait until it opened the portal.
