Efforts to secure a consensus governorship candidate within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State have reportedly suffered a setback following unsuccessful attempts to persuade Senator Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai to withdraw from the 2027 governorship contest.
According to credible sources, Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday led a high-level delegation to Senator Bomai’s residence in Abuja in a bid to broker consensus within the party.
The delegation reportedly included APC governorship aspirant Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali and former Minister of Power, Engineer Abubakar D. Aliyu.
Sources familiar with the meeting said the Vice President appealed to Senator Bomai, who currently represents Yobe South Senatorial District, to seek re-election to the Senate and support the emergence of Baba Mallam Wali as the party’s consensus candidate.
However, Senator Bomai was said to have declined the request, insisting on his constitutional right to contest the governorship position.
The senator, who is serving a second term in the National Assembly, has consistently maintained that he would not withdraw from the race without what he described as “convincing reasons.”
Political observers say the development could push the APC in Yobe State towards conducting a direct primary election to determine its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Senator Bomai is also believed to be a leading figure in the “G-6” bloc, a coalition of six APC governorship aspirants who have reportedly obtained the party’s nomination forms in accordance with APC guidelines.
