Yobe State University has officially secured accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for its College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital, marking a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare and education sectors.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, announced this achievement during the MDCN’s exit meeting held on June 2, 2025. The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to positioning Yobe as a future hub for medical tourism in Nigeria.

“Despite our progress, we remain committed to further strengthening the health sector so that Yobe can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with developed nations in terms of medical services,” he said.

Governor Buni pledged that all deficiencies identified by the MDCN during its assessment will be promptly addressed. He assured that the State Government will continue to work closely with the University and Teaching Hospital to implement sustainable improvements.

He commended the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bukar Jamri, along with the management teams of both the University and its Teaching Hospital, for their dedication and patriotic efforts in securing the accreditation. He described their work as a major step toward the state’s broader goal of becoming a destination for quality healthcare.

In his remarks, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, Deputy Registrar of the MDCN, expressed satisfaction with the progress made, particularly in infrastructure and academic readiness. He stated that the College of Medical Sciences and the Teaching Hospital deserve full accreditation status and urged the State Government to continue supporting the institution in addressing minor outstanding issues.

Professor Bukar Jamri, Vice-Chancellor of Yobe State University, highlighted the unwavering support of Governor Buni in both the education and healthcare sectors. He emphasized that the Governor has consistently backed the University’s initiatives, reflecting his administration’s long-term vision for the state.

With this accreditation, Yobe State takes a critical step toward transforming into a recognized center for medical education and healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
