The scholarship was awarded by Dr. Ali Ibrahim Abbas, an appointee of Governor Mai Mala Buni of the state.

Dr. Abbas, a political science professor, announced the scholarship on Sunday, following the conclusion of the Spelling Bee, which ended on Friday.

On a post on his Facebook official handle, Dr. Abbas explained that, he is also a beneficiary of free education from his primary school upto PHD level, sponsored by Yobe State government, hence the need to give back.

‘I have taken this solemn decision having reflected on my personal life experience of being a beneficiary of free education from my primary up to PhD level being sponsored by the government. I also believe it’s high time that we begin to give back in a more organized manner,’ he said.

Recalling his experience in similar program years ago, he added that his decision to award the scholarship was inspired by the passion and enthusiasm displayed by the students at the spelling competition.

‘When I met these children and watched them over participate in the competition, I couldn’t help but reflect back our years at FGC Buni Yadi when myself, Dr Hassan Maina Ali Dr Babagana Kundi Machina, Dr Baba Ncikuta Danbima Ali, Bar. Abdullahi Hussaini Tinja, Dr Naomi Saleh-Bangalu, etc represented our school in similar passion with huge anxiety and joy all the same moment,’ he narrated.

Except Humaira who won the 3rd prize in the competition and secured sponsorship, the ten students to benefit from this scholarship are from Bade local government area of Yobe, where Dr. Abbas hailed from.
